Asus vg259qm or msi mag251rx

Post by Smooth23 » 07 Mar 2021, 16:19

Hi everyone,

I just passed DAYS read and read bunch of topics in this forum. Thanks for these inputs :ugeek: !

So,
I have to order a monitor, my usage will be mainly competitive gaming such as CS, valorant, apex but also Warzone and other AAA games (CP2077 for eg).I will also enjoy some video on YouTube..
That’s why I was thinking about these two monitor instead of traditionnal TN (benQ zowie xl2546) as they seem to be more versatile

But cannot decide between those 2, it’s driving me crazy  some reviewers on YouTube set the mag251rx at 1st position and other the asus.

Mag 251rx seems to be more polyvalent as it seems to have better colour (?) but not sure about that. Is the asus’ s colour still good for an IPS? (Doesn’t want to go for the asus and have a tn colors *exaggerating*)

For competitive fps game which one is better ?
Which one is better in term of input lag and response time (each configured on their best setting)
I will run those game at 240+ fps (5600x / 3070)
I saw a review that said the asus can totally do the job for a cs competitive player but nothing for the mag so just wondering.
Also I don’t know if I will use 280hz as in my mind 240hz should be enough

Last info those 2 monitors are in the same price range in my country.

Many thanks in advance for reading, have a nice day everyone :)

Hey man

I own VG279QM, wich is same as 25" model. The monitor feels cheap, has a lot of annoying little issues like:
has too much overshoot bellow 200Hz/fps and OD cannot be adjusted when ELMB/S is enabled, untuned crosstalk, high input lag only when set to fixed 60-99Hz, slower boot times, not true bezel-less design. It's made to perform the best "only" at highest refresh rate/fps. Despite all of this it should do fine. (more detail here: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=8235&p=63695#p63695).
27" size is much better than 25", before this monitor I had 25" AW2518HF and it was too small. 27" pixel density is not bad at all for me. So if u don't mind slightly bigger pixels go for 27", targets are bigger and can be easier to aim.
MAG251RX has better response times but its not 280Hz like asus. Note that there is basically no difference between 240 vs 280Hz, only aliens steering wheel is more pronounced wich noone can tell the difference when gaming. VG279QM input lag feels extremely low at refreshrates above 100Hz.
Msi should take an edge when it comes to color reproduction but VG is also IPS, so colors shouldn't be an important factor in this case. Msi does better job with backlight strobing/ELMB but can not be used simultaneously with adaptive-sync (ELMB-S) like asus (asus's ELMB-S is basically useless because its not well tuned).

I'm curious about something.
All these new IPS models, how does mouse cursor look and dragging smoothly a small window with 3 lines and some words in notepad how text looks?

I have a VG258QR 165Hz and these two things are the only ones I notice.
The cursor gets a border of black pixels and the text in notepad blurs but perfectly readable (blurrier up and down than left and right).
Scrolling blurbusters forum, I can read the text fine and there is no blur like in notepad.

Judging by the photos, I would say my monitor looks better than both IPS.
The MAG looks clearly worse than the VG and both seem to show overshoot with a blue corona on the left.
On mine with TF 60, at naked eye, I can see the alien's face fine and two eyes, wich are hard to follow because they are so tiny.
At TF 80, the bottom UFOs with cyan background gets clearly less blurry at the left side and the landing feet but the middle and top UFOs get a slight corona, wich I think it's the same in VG279QM.

Depends on speed its moving at, looks fine. I used to have a good TN 240 and I prefer IPS. For a slightly slower response times you get better everything else.

Not sure if this is a good example

Results on ASUS looks only good on papper with maxed fps...
I play COD Warzone and in this game you can't have stable 240+ fps.
I got even 150-220 fps so MAG is perfect in this scenario. (even with RTX 3080 but well)

With a small smooth movement, the moment I start dragging notepad up or down the text becomes darker, meaning it's blurring.

With 240hz you need a 4ms window and since response time is slower than that (it seems), everything will be even more blurry. That's the issue I see. Response time needs to stay inside the scanout speed.
Maybe you gain in quality materials, colors and viewing angle wich is nice to watch movies from your bed and prefer it that way but for competitive gaming these won't help much since you are in front of the monitor so angle isn't a problem.

The XB252Q looks really good, we can see two central white rectangles separated on the red body, but again, the blue corona is there, so if you lower the overdrive it probably won't look as good.

I'm still puzzled at something, I keep seeing the alien's eyes completely blurred in all photos of all monitors.
At naked eye, do you see it like that on your monitor(s)?
On mine the face and the eyes are fine.

I read some users complaining that the VG25/79QM feels slow with lower fps and the input lag is high at 60hz. Maybe the issue is related when using VRR.
That happens with VRR and/or without it?

Only fixed lower refresh rates have higher input lag on 280 Hz ASUS monitors, with VRR enabled there is no high input lag. This means 280 Hz ASUS is not ideal for playing games that are locked on 60 Hz, like console games, because input lag on 60 Hz is indeed very high, although it's not like unplayable. I played Sekiro a lot on PC (this game is locked on 60 Hz) and while I can tell the lag is higher, it didn't bother me that much.

To clarify it completely: fixed 60 Hz produces high input lag, but 60 fps (if you're running a demanding game that is not Hz locked and fps drop to 60) with VRR enabled does not.

I like that you noticed that. Assuming we're taliking about sample-and-hold, not strobed ufos; to a naked eye alien eyes are not exactly blured like that but its close. The white separation between pupils is barely visible, you have to try hard to see it on 240Hz. Many other details are not perfectly represended through camera. I believe it can't capture such details.

If i had to photoshop pupils, it would look like this. Hopefully you can see the difference.

I mentioned it because I want to have a closer idea to how IPS looks like in person.
Seems they are slower and outside scanout speed is worse.
Mine at naked eye looks pretty much like the 4ms persistence. There should be a 6ms persistence photo.
On my monitor, the white lines in the red body are closer to each other.
