Is there any benefit to Display port over HDMI in input lag or response time?

Is there any benefit to Display port over HDMI in input lag or response time?

Post by gameinn » 26 Mar 2021, 16:54

I just got the Dell Alienware AW2521HF to tide me over till I see when the Viewsonic monitors come out.

Is there any benefit to using HDMI over Display Port for 240Hz? I hear G-Sync only works on Display Port but if I don't care about that stuff is HDMI better in anyway?

No, there is no benefit whatsoever, DisplayPort is objectively better for PC.

I had AW2518HF with HDMI in box, then I bought display port cabel just for test, there wasn't difference.

Versions are more important than the port type.

For example
- old HDMI versus new DisplayPort
- old DisplayPort versus new HDMI

It's really only relevant for things like 5-10 year differences such as DP 2.0 versus HDMI 1.2 .... Where one display is using a port tech 5+ years older than the other.

Also, HDMI/DP transceiver quality matters a lot -- as well as the scaler processing attached to them -- faster processing of display micropackets in a more jitter-free manner at lower lag to tinier scanline buffers instead of full frame buffers.

And sometimes refresh rate support is hamstrung due to either transceiver limits or older cable -- e.g. lower Hz on the HDMI than DP. But many newer models of 240Hz monitors now can do 240Hz on both HDMI and DP.
