Help me find a suitable 144hz monitor

Post by Panda » 28 Mar 2021, 17:03

Hello guys,

I'm starting this topic cause i'm deseperately trying to find myself a good 1080p 144hz-165hz gaming monitor, i've got a pretty noice config (3070 - i6 10600k -16g ram) and i get 144fps consistent in pretty much every shooters. I know this is totally overkill for 144hz 1080p but i enjoy having my fps being maxed out and i feel more confortable on 144hz than 240hz (my eyes just can't keep up with 240 for some reasons...).
I currently have the LG27GN750-b, this is a very good monitor, runing at 240hz, accurate colors, good reviews overall, but in some games it's just a blury mess and it doesn't offer any blur reduction mod so i end up using it at 144hz, wich somehow offers better clarity than 240hz (to me)... i know this is a downgrade in terms of monitor but i don't mind downgrading 240hz if it's for better clarity at 144hz.
I recently had the opportunity trying out the all mighty 2546k and boy oh boy dyac+ has some crazy potential!! I tried it out with both 144hz and 240hz, at 240hz as i was saying earlier, i just can't keep up with it even with dyac enabled, it felt very stuttery and not really smooth (especially in Apex), and at 144hz, mindblowing experience!! Of course i did get some noticable screen tearing at 144hz but i don't really mind the tear compared to the clarity than dyac offered during the try out.

Besides what offers the 2546k, what turned me off was its price, way too expensive atm... I've never experienced such clarity before trying good blur reduction mod, wich leads me towards this forum in search of help! I'm pretty much looking for a 1080p 144hz-165hz monitor wich offers clarity, a well tuned overdrive and a good input lag (i know 240 is better than 144 in terms of input delay, but to me it's just a question of adjusting to it), i don't really mind the panel neither the colors that it's offering or viewing angles since i'm more oriented towards competitive gaming.

Big thanks to anyone who took time to read and participate to this topic.

Yesterday i got the XL2546K: The colors and textures look great: Especially in PUBG and MW. U have a big advantage in spotting enemy's.

But I also play Quake Live. There's a huge difference in the amount of frags I can get with my XG2402 and the XL2546K. On the XL2546K I am just a regular player. Above average at best.

On the XL2546K I had a couple times where my plasma gun just couldn't catch up with the enemy or my mouse movement. I just switched back to the XG2402 and the difference is humongous.
On the XG2402 for example I am 9 of 10 at the top of the list on the servers I usually play. With the XL2546K its something like 3 out of 10. I like Quake Live just for that. It's a game where I am actually good at. I don't wanna give that up.

So unfortunately the XL2546K is going back to the store tomorrow for a refund.

I am going to give the 360hz a try. If its also mediocre @ Quake Live I'm going to stick with the XG2402 until the new Viewsonic 24'' 240 IPS comes out. Around next week the Alienware AW2521H 360hz should arrive. I will keep u guys posted.

I'd advice you to keep your 27GN750 despite the fact it does not have backlight strobing. Through time of using it you'd see you don't really need strobing. It would be nice if you had a chance to test it for a few weeks. I upgraded from 240 TN non-strobed to 240 strobed and I did not benefit from it in fps games. Non-strobed would do just fine. I have not experienced dyac yet tho, I don't believe its that much better.

Well it's been 5-6 month i have the LG monitor and i believe it provides more motion blur than expected even tho the reviews of the LG are good overall (something feels weird..), OR, i think the overdrive might introduce more blur at higher refresh rates. Isn't it suppose to be the opposite?? like higher refresh rates introduce more clarity than lower ones?? I'm so confuse..
Talking about Dyac+ i believe it offers the kind of clarity that old CRT monitor used to provide besides the zowie being led, this is very interesting you should take a look if you never did before, i believe Dyac (if tuned properly) will be game changing in a near future.
Btw thank you for your advice :)

Maybe you're experiencing corona/white trailing motion artifact. It occures when very high level of overdrive is applied. Try playing with lower levels if that is the case but it doesn't have to be. I remember when I first saw 240Hz TN... having high expectations, thought there would be no ghosting and I was disappointed. I also experienced CRT @75, 120, 140, 160Hz and was also dissapointed even tho the ufo test was the clearest there is, no blur whatsoever. It still felt weird and choppy in games probably because of the refresh rate limitation. I believe until we get CRT levels of response times and 500+Hz some of us just won't be satisfied.

Actually i'm using the recommanded overdrive provided by Rtings "fast" without any corona artifacts, i tried the higher one wich offered more clarity but has corona and it's unplayable (facts i played better thanks to the clarity motion issue but corona artifacts are way too distracting), i think it's just too blury, i will try to get a higher end 240hz display like AW2521HF to see if my problem is more "monitor related". Man i wish i could try such crt experience and i agree with you, i'm expecting way too much than companies can actually offer...

AW2521HF would basically be the same experience as 27GN750 since it also does not have strobing. So if classical sample-and-hold monitors are not enough then strobing would suit you best.
Well XL2546K would be the best option for you, or even discontinued XL2746S, or XG270. I would personally avoid downgrading to 25" size or TN panel. But if that is too expensive here are some to consider:

MAG251RX IPS 240Hz
upcoming XG2431 IPS 240Hz - tuned by blurbusters
avoid VG25/279QM, VG258QM for strobing below 200Hz

Cheaper:
EX2510 IPS 144
VG249Q IPS 144
VP249QGR IPS 144
XL2411K TN 144Hz - no adaptive sync

You can always find extra cheap CRT monitors and experience best motion clarity with downside of low resolution.

Good luck :)

Thank you so much for such a detail answer, i will consider all of these monitors!

If you don't mind TN then search no more. Go for the ViewSonic XG240R.
