Cannot use Display Scaling - where is the limitation?

Monitor:

ViewSonic XG2703-GS (27" 165Hz 1440p IPS G-Sync)

which has scaling options in OSD:

But no matter what i use, NVIDIA CP or CRU, all non-native resolutions simply give a black screen. Why such behavior i wonder?! I'm using the DP cable that came with the monitor.

Any ideas? Why does the monitor provide a scaling mode option and then it doesn't do anything?
