New monitor 144Hz or 240Hz for gaming

Post by C64 » 18 Apr 2021, 06:52

Hi,
I'm looking to buy my first high refresh monitor, but I have so many questions, so please help me if you can. I like fast pace FPS shooters, but I'm not a pro gamer, and I don't play competitive - I just want to have the best possible experience amateur like me can get. I play online multiplayer games like Battlefield or Warzone and on my old HD 60Hz panel I see big blurry mess during intense gameplay.

1. Should I go for 144Hz or 240Hz? My setup is not the best, I get 90fps in Warzone in HD. I plan to upgrade my PC in December, but since I like to play more demanding AAA games, I won't be able to keep up with upgrades every year to top specs, to be able to get 200+ fps. Does it make sense in my situation to go for 240Hz monitor, or should I stick to 144Hz?

2. If I decide to go for 240Hz, is it going to look very bad if I set monitor at fixed 240Hz and play with lower fps?

3. Is it worth buying HD monitor in 2021? Same with TN panel?

4. I have £300 to spend for it, so far I was considering AOC 24G2 or BenQ EX2510, but should I go for something better with that budget to be good for now, and also be more futureproof?

If you're not a serious competitive player then 144Hz is a good choice.

Usually it can look distracting just because you've experienced higher refresh rate before.
But if u ask me I'd say everything below 120Hz is noticeably worse, 120+ is perfectly fine.

I don't think u can even find one today. Full HD (1080p) would be suitable for your pc.
Avoid TN panels if you're looking for future proof monitor. IPS panels can easily be found in budget options.

Just in case if you are sensitive to motion blur buy monitor that supports some type of motion blur reduction tech (ELMB, DyAc+, VRB...https://blurbusters.com/faq/motion-blur-reduction/). Because even the best 240+Hz monitor technology still can not provide blur free experience without blur reduction enabled.

In this thread you can find the list of today's go-to budget monitors and they all support blur reduction:

underlined ones are preferred. EX2510 is more premium 144Hz option but very similar, if not the same as other ones.

Thank you for the reply. I decided to go for EX2510 from the list, because it was tiny bit more expensive than others, and I loved it. Unfortunately I have to send it back, cause I've noticed stuck pixel after few hours of use that won't go away no matter what, but that's another story. So I'm at the point of looking something in stock again, but at least I know what I want now ;)
