VG248QE user bought a XL2546K, oops..

Post by prod1G » 27 Apr 2021, 19:01

hey fellow busters of blur,

i'm a long time VG248QE user and i tought of getting into a higher hertz monitor..
i've decided to go with 24", 1080p, 240hz, because i like the formfactor and im able to run games at high fps above 240hz.
i mostly play quake-style games like doombringer (1000fps), q4 (250fps), qc (~300fps) and some overwatch (~300fps)

i've just impulse bought a XL2546K (arrived today, didn't open yet), because of good reviews and seeing DyAc+ footage.
as it is with such a purchase, i only after the fact, read some more about the screen and other comparable 240hz monitors..

i came to the conclusion, that i don't think i'm going to use the strobing, wich i paid the premium for..
maybe just to see how it performs, but not for everyday gaming-use because of the added factors that come with it, like setting it up right, crosstalk-artifacts and added delay..

i basically would be ok with a "VG248QE v2", with 240hz and a bit better motion clarity than trace free 40 and less persived input delay than trace free 80 (motion clarity on trace free 40 seems the best but response time and felt input delay is better on trace free 80, as im ok with the slight overshoot, but snappier feeling)

after i've gone through some threads on here, and comparing Rtings reviews, i looked for the best non-strobed alternatives and came across these:

VG259qm:
never had IPS, but advantages seem to be better colors and no pixel inversion, though i fear added input delay and less motion clarity

VG258qm:
ok input delay, ok motion clarity, maybe pixel inversion?

XL2546K:
stays in the race as it seems to have the lowest input delay and good nonstrobed motion clarity, though i don't like the AMA settings as there are just two and "High" and "Premium" seem to have noticable overshoot

XL2540K:
no DyAc+, lower price, maybe same motion clarity performance nonstrobed as the XL2546s? though it seems to be a different panel
so maybe not the same input delay?

so maybe ya'll could help me with my choice or even recommend somethin else, as dont´t want to get something that won't fit my needs.
thanks in advance :)

(sorry for the maybe hard read and my not so good english)

You can reduce the overshoot of the XL2546S in the factory menu, by changing the "OD Gain" setting.
The old VG248QE also has this setting in the same type of factory menu.

Hold down button #3 and #4 while pressing the power button. Then button #5 to enter the factory menu later.

I returned my XL2546K a few days ago. The main reason why I returned mine is the amount of inverse ghosting and strobing artifacts. Even with AMA OFF and OD gain on 0, there was still a powdery trail behind the UFO. The text also looked disgusting while scrolling web pages.

Also, unlike every other BenQ 240Hz monitor, black equalizer on the XL2546k is broken. It slightly yellows the image and when you switch it from 0 to 1, the light areas become darker. (black equalizer should not darken light areas of the image).

I would tolerate all of that if the XL2546K was the clearest monitor around, but it's not. That title goes to the XL2546S(discontinued). Both use the same panel, but the S is much better tuned. Here's proof.

* Now look at how much better the XL2546S UFO looks https://youtu.be/h7DBqyGf7JE?t=9. (That's just AMA high and DyAc on premium).
Here's a comment from someone who had both. https://www.reddit.com/r/Zowie/comments ... &context=3

If you don't plan on using DyAc, the XL2546K is 100% a waste of money. I would get the VG258QM or the XL2540K. My VG258QM arrived yesterday, I'm gonna start testing it tonight or tomorrow. I also have an XL2540K in transit.

i had a typo so i edited the post, i bought the "K" not the "S" variant, sry for the confusion..
thanks for the info, tried it with the ASUS and could actually fine tune the TF 80 step to look better, but its sad it doesnt save the setting so i have to redo it everytime it comes back from stand by..

i returned the "K", too. didnt even open or tried it, after reading the threads..
but i looked for a used "S" and actually got one for 400€ (125€ cheaper than the "K", arriving monday i hope).
for now i'll be stuck with it, because bought used but would this be the winner over VG258QM and XL2540K?

what intrigued me about the VG259QM was the lower measured input lag and people reporting that the IPS would feel snappier than TN and more like a CRT. is this negligible or a true factor?
i mean, im coming from the VG248QE wich has a measured input lag of 5.1ms compared to the 1.9ms of the VG259QM and the 2.4ms of the VG258QM.

but after seeing testufo videos comparing the XL2546S and the VG259QM i thought the better motion clarity would beat the 0.5ms better input delay..

IPS doesn't have a lower input lag than TN or vice versa. Input lag is just signal processing. It's the time difference between when there is a signal from the GPU, and when that signal is displayed on the screen. Input lag is independent of the type of LCD panel.

The BenQ ZOWIE XL2546S and the XL2564K are the exact same panel so they will perform the exact same with only differences being panel variation. From all evidence presented by you the reddit post by the manufacture themselves that is the conclusion everyone else came to. All the non standardized tests posted really did not show any difference between the the S or K model.

Never judge a monitor before actually using it. Should have seen how it performs you had it in your hands to try. Never ever listen to what people say in the forums it will always be 99% opinions.

The difference from panel variation is usually minor, and it shouldn't be that big. If it was just panel variation, you would find at least one XL2546K that performs like that XL2546S. My XL2546K and any other XL2546K on the internet all perform worse compared to that XL2546S.

Don't listen to whatever the manufacturer says on reddit. Zowie says that both the X2546K and the Xl2540K use the same panel, but that's completely false. (Q250HTN00 A200 vs M250HTN018).

I've asked Zowie and they told me they don't have the same panels. I had an XL2546K for 2 weeks, I returned it because of some issues it had with the cables and Amazon didn't want to send me the cables. I wanted to ask a question, is DYAC+ on noticeable to you, because I never noticed a difference in motion clarity (in UFO tests I did), in game there was zero difference. Getting an Aorus KD25F soon :)

To see it in games well, you need
1. framerate = Hz method such as VSYNC ON, framerate cap, or RTSS Scanline Sync
2. Staring at moving objects instead of stationary objects (e.g. crosshairs)
3. Extremely high poll rate at high DPIs

Strobed results are easier to see, for example, in Rainbow Six than CS:GO. Or Rocket League. Or panning/scrolling games like DOTA/LOL. Etc.
