244hz or 144hz?

Post by rocade930 » 09 May 2021, 16:59

Is there any reason for me to get a 244hz monitor if i cannot get over 150 fps in most titles? The things i care the most about are input lag and motion clarity.

I would say no. There's no reason. Unless the 240Hz monitor has better characteristics than your current one. But the refresh rate difference alone isn't going to get you anything.

So there wont be any negative outcomes out of getting less than 244 fps on a 244hz monitor? It would be the same as on a 144hz one? I've got a TN 144hz panel and planning to get an IPS 244hz ViewSonic XG243 when it releases.

Definitely go for 144hz quality monitor. 2560x1440 144hz would be perfect. There are not many games you can play @ 144+ fps so there really is no point unless you play very competitively, crazy about response time, input lag, and want to squeeze every bit of advantage you can get.

I beg to differ.

There's benefit to 240 Hz even just for browser scrolling.

Double Hz = half motion blur.

Some of us get motion blur nausea. People who get motionsick easily during scrolling/panning (even mudane stuff like browsers, maps, etc) should consider a 240 Hz IPS nowadays. There is ergonomic benefit for some of us.

Some non-gamers are now getting 240 Hz because of this!

However, 240 Hz options are indeed usually limited to 1080p and less.

Yes there is a difference in motion blur and I can tell that too with asus vg259qm @ 280hz versus viewsonic 27 xg2703-gs 144hz. I can clearly see the difference between them but if you are playing 100-140 fps on a 240hz monitor do you still get that double hz = half motion blur benefit ? Or is it somehow diminishes the lesser the fps ?

While we are on the subject another question should I go above 144fps on a 144hz monitor while playing quake live which has 250fps cap. Or should I cap it to 140fps on a 144hz monitor ? 250 fps on a 144hz monitor is a bad idea ?

Another thing, there is not a large fps gap between 2560x1440 vs 1080p. It varies between titles but most of the time the difference is really low, especially if you don't have the latest and expensive cpu for 1080p.

I have been using pc without OC , default clocks for cpu and I'm not satisfied with the fps I get for 1080p. Especially older titles dx11 and before that because of not utilizing cpu cores efficiently or not at all. Rather play on 1440p to be honest almost at the same fps or close to it may be maxiumum 20-30fps difference depending on the title but the quality looks way different especially graphic heavy titles like RDR2. I had to increase resolution scale to 2560x1440 on a 1080p monitor to get rid of blurry. The difference in sharpness and clear picture is really different. What I find funny is I was playing rdr2 on a 3440x1440 monitor with 6800xt @100fps. And now I get the same fps @ 1080p - resolution scale @ 2560x1440. All settings same, nothing changed.

Current gen gpus strong enough to run games on 2560x1440 easily, I have been using xg2703-gs with 1080ti and it was great, 980ti shouldn't though last time I checked the benchmarks it falls really behind even on 1080p. DX12 and vulkan is great for cpu intensive games 1080p players will benefit from it but I still don't see a big fps difference between those resolutions.

Its a trade off which depends on the usage.

I have 240hz LG.
I play Apex,...with Freesync...lets say i get 150fps sometimes 160fps.
Hell yeah i would ten times BUY a 240hz Monitor even though i can only get 150ish FPS even WITH Freesync.

The Mouse feels noticely better with 240hz and Freesync on and 150fps instead of 143-2-1 lockedfps and 144hz Freesync.

Now ofc many will say (ofc you idiot because you get 10 or 20fps more) so i tested 240hz with 140 and 130fps and Freesync and the same ofc then with 144hz and Freesync.
And then without Freesync, just raw, Vsync off, no RTSS and with RTSS and AMD Chill.
Without "Freesync"...it is even more noticeable how much more "direct" and "snappier" your Mouse will feel regardeless if you can squeeze the Frames of 240hz. (despite ofc the Tearing)4

Maybe this Phenomena has to do with a Refreshrate of 144hz being suboptimal to be set on a 240hz Monitor (i read something about scanline delays at the top to the bottom) and a "TRUE" real 144hz max Monitor will feel better, but i can only speak for myself on my setup that it is worth to play 240hz even if you cant get the frames as high.

But again, this is only my opinion, specific for Apex now and the Monitor i use. Cant really tell you how good or bad it will be in other Game Engines and with other Monitors.

If GtG and MPRT is both identical on both monitors -- then they look identical: 144fps at 240Hz has same motion blur as 144fps at 144Hz.

Motion blur is directly proportional to frametime (framerate).

However, there's better mousefeel and less input lag. Each 144fps frame display faster in only 1/240sec on a 240Hz monitor. I always recommend a higher high-quality max-Hz you can afford if you want the lowest latency.

And a good 240Hz panel may have faster LCD GtG,which may still make 144fps look clearer than on certain very old 144Hz panels, especially LCD GtG (pixel response) can sometimes age over time -- with GtG becoming slower after ten years.

It's possible for a crappy 240Hz monitor to have slower pixel response than a very good 144Hz monitor, so make sure to check reviews (e.g. RTINGS / HardwareUnboxed / etc) that you're not downgrading the panel when you're upgrading the refresh rate.
