ViewSonic XG270, 120Hz not an option in Hertz Limiter

Post by Dreamifi » 20 Jun 2021, 17:09

Hi! I got a ViewSonic XG270 recently largely motivated by it being Blur Busters approved. Early impressions are very positive but I am confused about how to configure it.

What I care about the most is getting rid of blur and other artifacts related to tracking motion on the screen, both when gaming and when watching videos or streams. According to some older thread I read 120Hz is supposed to be optimal for the strobing to do it's magic, because it is exactly half of the screens highest possible refresh rate. Is this correct?

I also reason in my head that it would be good for the refresh rate to be a multiple of 60, since streams usually send in 60Hz and I imagine if that doesn't sync up to the screen that would cause timing artifacts. I will also be streaming myself in 60Hz and I imagine having fps vsynced to a multiple of 60 would help in making the stream footage as smooth as it can be too. All of this is mostly speculation to me though, I don't fully understand these things, but these are the reasons I would like to set the monitor to run specifically at 120Hz.

There are two places I've found to set the refresh rate. There is something called "Hertz Limiter" in the settings in the monitor menu itself and there is a Windows monitor setting. My guess is that I want to set both of those to the same thing, is that correct? Or should I be leaving "Herz Limiter" on native and only change refresh rate in Windows?

If I am supposed to set it in "Hertz Limiter" I have a problem, because it is not giving 120Hz as an option.

The options it does offer is:
Native
60Hz
100Hz
144Hz
180Hz
240Hz

What should I do?

I think, if you want 120Hz, limit to 144Hz in monitor setting limiter, say Windows to use it @120Hz...

If any game's configured to use "max refresh rate" or "illimited FPS", it will not be able to go beyond 144Hz.

Ah so is how it works that the computer is actually controlling the refresh rate and the limiter can override it but only at the top end?
