Bit late to this thread but I ran into the same problem as you and I think what caused it for me was that I clicked the restore button in Manage 3D Settings in teh NVIDIA Control Panel. I then went into the global settings and changed the Max Frame Rate from 'OFF' to set to 280hz. This then enabled me to set the refresh rate again in the resolution settings. Hope this helps.

But hdmi doesn't give 240 hz. So how did you fix the 144hz problem by using a n hdmi cable?Hybrics wrote: ↑13 Jul 2022, 15:11I have the TN variant VG258QM and has the same issues, it not nvidia or windows fault, that problem happen on every 280hz asus model, VG258/VG259/VG279 the only fix is use the hdmi port, i try it and the 144hz problem never happen again.Inact wrote: ↑12 Jul 2022, 22:36Hey I'm having the same issue. Re: Need help - ASUS VG259QM - suddenly capped at 144hz
It does, the monitor has hdmi 2.0 and is perfectly capable to run 240hz over hdmiInact wrote: ↑13 Jul 2022, 21:48But hdmi doesn't give 240 hz. So do i need an hdmi 2.0 wire? regular hdmi won’t work?
Re: Need help - ASUS VG259QM - suddenly capped at 144hz
I remember this issue when I use to own this monitor..
Its a glitch with monitor that is probably caused by the overclocking feature.
Try just resetting the OSD settings on the monitor, should fix the problem.

Re: Need help - ASUS VG259QM - suddenly capped at 144hz
Is this a permanent fix? Or will the issues start occurring again after a while?
I'm having this issue with my VG258QM.
Also- does anyone know if there is any type of HDMI cable that support 280hz?

Re: Need help - ASUS VG259QM - suddenly capped at 144hz
I'm a bit late to the party but just came across this page and think I might be able to help.
I am no expert but it seems Adaptive-Sync with the Display Port connection has something to do with the monitor reverting to 144hz.
This is what I do to get back to 240hz -
Go to the monitor OSD settings and turn off Adaptive-Sync
Then on NVCP / Windows Advanced Display Settings I can turn on 240hz
Then turn Adaptive-Sync back on from the monitor OSD and 240hz is still enabled.
Hope this helps your issue.

Maybe another tip to toss in is to; set Scaling mode on per GPU; not display if you have multiple monitors.
CPU: AMD R7 5800x3D ~ PBO2Tuner -30 ~ no C states
RAM: Gskill Bdie 2x16gb TridentZ Neo ~ CL16-16-16-36 1T ~ fine tuned latency
GPU: ASUS TUF 3080 10G OC Edition(v1/non-LHR) ~ disabled Pstates ~ max oced
OS: Fine tuned Windows 10 Pro, manual tuned.
Monitor: Alienware AW2521H ~ mix of ULMB/Gsync @ 240hz/360hz
