Need help - ASUS VG259QM - suddenly capped at 144hz

Post by Lyra3 » 28 Jun 2021, 08:34

Hello everyone!
I bought ASUS TUF Gaming VG259QM one month ago.
I've been using it with my laptop lenovo y540 - i5 9300H + nvidia 1660ti.
I had it connected through display port cable plugged into minidisplay port using reduction.
I haven't had any problems with it, until now.
I had it overclocked to 280hz. Everything was working fine, but all of a sudden, i don't what it was, but monitor was suddenly capped at 144hz. Even tho OSD is showing overclocked to 280hz.
Idk if i did anything to cap the refresh rate. I know that i installed new nvidia drivers around that time, but i tried to install older drivers, still it didn't work.
I went into settings - advanced display settings and i can only select 144hz or below. Same in nvidia control panel.
I tried everything that i can think of, but i can't find the solution, so i am asking you guys for help.
Feel free to ask me any questions, i can provide screenshots if needed.

Did you use CRU to add higher refresh rates? If yes, then you need to do it again after every driver update. You can export the current settings in CRU to a file to make that easier. You then only need to import that file after a driver update.

I didn't use anything besides nvidia control panel before. Should i download CRU and add higher refresh rates?
Forgive me, I'm new at these things so i probably need more handholding. Whenever i plug monitor with hdmi cable into laptop, it works with 240hz. But i have no idea why it is suddenly capped at 144 with displayport cable.

I'm not sure what you mean by "overclocking" then. Did you add custom modes in the nvidia panel that have higher refresh rates than what the monitor supports?

Nope i didn't. Monitor in its OSD has option to overclock refresh rate from 240hz into 270-280hz using displayport cable. I did use it like this for a month. I didn't have to do anything in nvidia cotrol panel. I had options in display advanced settings or nvidia control panel resolutions 144hz - 240hz - 280hz. But now i only have 144, even tho in monitors osd it is shown that is overclocked at 280. In this picture, i used to have racing mode - display port - 1920x1080@280hz now i have racing mode - display port - 1920x1080@144hz

here i had options, below - 144 - 240 - 280
now only 144 or below

OK. That's not what people usually mean with "overclocking" so I got confused.

No idea what could be causing this. I assume toggling the overclocking option in the monitor's OSD off and on again didn't help?

Nope. Tried that too. I have no idea also. I tried many things, but still can't figure it out. :(

Try turning off the monitor, also disconnect the power cable, then the displayport cable and connect them again. If nothing helps, I would contact Asus support.

OK. Little progress. I tried your advice and for brief moment there was 240hz option on my screen in advanced display settings. I clicked on it i had Displayport NO SIGNAL on my screen and it went back to 144 and 240hz option disappeared. After changing displayport version in OSD from 1.2 to 1.1 and back. I have 240hz option again. But whenever i click on it, it just says NO SIGNAL and goes back to 144. When i try to overclock - in OSD to 280hz i have no signal and it doesn't even go back to 144. Is it bad cable? or minidisplayport reduction is damaged or what? Haven't had any problem for 1 month.

Hey man,
Bit late to this thread but I ran into the same problem as you and I think what caused it for me was that I clicked the restore button in Manage 3D Settings in teh NVIDIA Control Panel. I then went into the global settings and changed the Max Frame Rate from 'OFF' to set to 280hz. This then enabled me to set the refresh rate again in the resolution settings. Hope this helps.
