The first photo is indeed ELMB sync BUT with my OD gain changes, without those changes there will be slight coronas following the UFO. ELMB looked slightly better than ELMB sync but not by a lot. I really wish they re-introduced the option to change the strobe length, there's strobing performance left on the table AND I think the monitor is too bright in my dark room despite the elmb sync being enabled.

The performance is consistently good down until around 200 hz. Below that you start getting some overshoot again.

I change my mind, OD 15 is better than OD 12 that I mentioned earlier, just takes a while to see it :P

Can you do ELMB (not sync) ufo test? Try reducing camera ISO or monitor brightness a little bit.

ELMB sync disengages at 125 hz. Anything below that enables regular Gsync compatible/Freesync.

It's gross :O I almost puked when I saw it.

This one is with the default OD setting of 1A

Image
This one is with modified OD of 12 (15 has slightly higher overshoot)

It's funny that I never notice this cause my frames are always above 200 hz XD

In order to get rid of the halos, you'd have to use OD gain 06 or 07. I believe that's asus's OD 3 in the OSD.

I tested 144hz, 165, 240 and 270. I think the BEST OD to use across these refreshes is actually 0D (13), it does cause a little ghosting around 270 hz but it's hardly noticeable during gameplay but provides very solid response times for 240 hz and even less inverse ghosting for 144 hz.

Here's the full range using my modified OD gain of 0D (13)

240 hz with elmb sync

165 hz with elmb sync

I hope this helps.

Ohh yes, nice! This helps alot.

This brings us very good news! Asus finally fixed double strobe issue, at least with this monitor.
1st gen ELMB-SYNC was out of sync + double strobe - VG27AQ
2nd gen double strobe - VG279QM
3rd gen double strobe only at lower refresh rates - PG329Q
and now 4th gen fixed all - XG279AQM. Interestingly they all seem to have locked overdrive, not sure tho.
This looks as good as classical ELMB. Now I wonder if it behaves the same in games (this could be tested in Frog Pursuit), it probably works the same way.
There is still room for improvement. Double images you see that start to appear from middle screen and up/down is crosstalk (badly tuned), not double strobe. Asus seem to do bad job at it quite often. This (119Hz) is how best tuned crosstalk we have today looks like (IPS) - middle clear with artifacts moved to top and bottom for less distraction.
Also wider ELMB-SYNC range would of been nice, at least 85Hz min. Another major flaw with this monitor would be locked overdrive with ELMB/SYNC making gaming below 200Hz look bad. It is possible to tune it within factory menu but it doesn't memorize the changes. Did you find any workaround to this?

EDIT:
It is not single strobe ELMB-SYNC.
