Help me pick a new monitor under $600

Post by Flickspeed » 11 Jul 2021, 13:24

I need help picking the best monitor based on the following criteria:

24.5" to 27" Full HD 1920x1080 res max. G-sync able. At least a 240hz base max refresh

*top 10 Low input lag in VRR.
*top 10 Low input lag in VRR (60Hz) because I will be using g-sync at 120 fps.
*Middle dot overlay (Alienware doesn't have it as I am aware)

If we can't find one under $600 then we can go over as long as we can meet the criteria above.

I was going to get the VG259QM but then realized it will be total crap at 120hz while in G-sync due to poor performance at lower Hz.
I read things here about how the XV252Q Z is good but couldn't find one in US or Canada. Also there are so many variations of these acers and the naming is very confusing. Heard good things about MAG251RX, but can't seem to find input lag results at 60Hz.

VG25/279QM is bad at 120Hz only if u use ELMB, otherwise for classical vrr you have 6 levels of overdrive. These two also have input lag issue only at fixed 60Hz (actually fixed 60-100Hz). This means if u set it to 280Hz and adaptive-sync goes down to 60hz/fps it will not have input lag. But there are other models that don't have these unnecessary issues.

I know MAG251RX is better in other ways except uniformity. Don't know much about XV252Q Z, no detailed reviews.

What about those 360Hz models. AW2521H can be found for $600. There is a $500 390Hz XV252Q F.

Are you positive about the ASUS not having increased input lag in VRR when VRR would be forcing the monitor to use 120Hz? Would like to hear more from others regarding this, because I have a different Asus right now and don't think that is the case.

As for the 360hz models, as long as they meet my requirements I will be happy to see them. When proposing a display please mention the native refresh/res input lag at the very least and possibly the 60hz input lag.

These are all fixed refresh rates, not vrr.

Don't worry about input lag too much, except if its extremely high like in VG's 60Hz situation.

I saw Chief said multiple times here on forums that 240Hz monitors have higher input lag at 60Hz than native 60Hz monitors and it's true, you can see that from this bar chart. Upcoming XG2431 (23.8" 1080p 240Hz IPS) is confirmed not to have this problem. So maybe that one would be good for you.
360Hz monitors definitely have the lowest input lag at max res.

I still worry because 120Hz is very close to 60hz when it comes to a 280hz or 360hz display. So those input lag numbers would start ramping up incase the same symptom happens in VRR at lower refreshes.

Regarding the XG2431 I don't see G-sync support mentioned anywhere.

What do you think about the MAG and Acer model I mentioned in this thread?

BTW just found a result for mag251rx for 60hz the poster says

18 ms input lag at 60hz on my leo bodnar on msi mag251rx

39 on the asus vg279qm

And I want something closer to 10ms at 60hz.

Input lag is something that is very hard to get an impression of. Usually the small differences are hard to notice unless u tested bunch of monitors with reliable method and compared side by side.

If you often play at fixed 60Hz than avoid VG25/279QM, but any fixed rr input lag above 100Hz are not crap. That includes 120Hz.
And trust me you cannot find any info on VRR 120Hz input lag, only fixed 120Hz. And even that is very rare.

MAG251RX is better in many ways, but uniformity is worse than VG' which can be annoying. Haven't tried it but thats all i know.
Don't know anything about XV252QZ.

Nvidia gpus should work with freesync too. It was a risk few years ago, but not so much anymore. So XG2431 could be a good pick for u. Wait for some reviews and see.

I'd recommend the Viewsonic xg270. It fits all your criteria and the ulmb mode is the best out there for a IPS panel atm ("Blur Buster Approved"). No 60hz strobing though. If that's important you can wait for the release of the ViewSonic XG2431 later this month. It is a smaller screen with Blur Buster Certification 2.0 and 60hz strobing.

If you don't use strobing than buying TN in 2021 is not a reasonable choice.
