Possible VG279QM/VG259QM 60hz Input lag fix

Post by andrelip » 29 Jul 2021, 22:32

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.reddit ... _your_ps5/

He reported to be able to overwrite the EDID of VG279QM, and the service menu seems to have that option.

My idea is to replace the default 1080p@60 and 1080p@120 with Large VT based on the native 240hz timings.

My biggest concern is that the monitor seems to have multiple edids based on the options (overdrive, elmb, free sync). So I don't know if the tutorial will fit.

Also, I'm not sure if the PS5 will support the mode.

Any opinions or someone brave enough to test this? 😁

That is interesting — forcing PS5 to accept a Large Vertical Total (Quick Frame Transport aka QFT) via a custom edited EDID. Maybe derive it off a 120Hz VT1125 mode -> 60Hz VT2250 mode.

The rule of thumb is to double Vertical Totals for every refresh rate halving, by editing the Vertical Total number while keeping “Pixel Clock” and “Horizontal Refresh Rate” exactly unmodified. In this case, QFT modes is almost 100% reliable in working on current FreeSync-compatible 120Hz and 240Hz displays.

However, VRR and QFT has similar lag, and VRR is an easier form of QFT. QFT is best when you need low-lag for fixed-Hz modes.

Before attempting to rewrite monitor’s own EDIDs with custom QFT EDIDs, make sure to fully test the modes. It’s best to overwrite the non-FreeSync EDID, not the FreeSync EDID, when you’re writing QFT modes, since VRR is already defacto QFT for lower framerates(refresh rates), and QFT is best for reducing lag (and/or strobe crosstalk) of fixed-Hz at refresh rates below monitor’s maximum.

It accepts and feels way better than native even with vsync on in Windows (present in the start of the blank).

The only real concern is about bricking the monitor doing something wrong due to multiple edids. Also I'm in Brazil and only have a Macbook (16” 2020 full of mods), so installing Linux is risk and can brick the EFI (I did it once installing Clover by accident😂).

LargeVT only works well with DisplayPort.
Tried with HDMI, and it goes black if I increase the blanking too much.
I've also noticed that Freesync is not available for me using HDMI (AMD 5500m from a Macbook Pro 2020 16").

Large VTs really do fix the 60 Hz lag, or any other refresh rate lag actually. Inside and outside VRR mode. From my testing latency was reduced by ∼32 ms - viewtopic.php?p=79200#p79200. I did the VTs trick just now and then I see that chief has already mentioned it long time ago.
