I have an Acer XB271HK that is 4K 60Hz G-sync. I really notice a difference when I globally cap the frame-rate in NVCP to 58fps.
I've had this thing for years, and was considering getting a 4K 144hz G-Sync monitor (maybe the Acer X28 if it ever materialises). I'm just wondering - would there be any issues with having a global NVCP frame cap of 60fps on that monitor, running 144hz? I might make exceptions for some games, but generally I'm happy with 60fps, most games are also happy at 60fps, and I prefer to give my GPU some headroom so it doesn't sound like a hoover.
BTW I have tried overclocking my current monitor but it won't go above 60hz.

60 FPS 144Hz G-SYNC has faster frame delivery than 58 FPS 60Hz G-SYNC. So no, there's no downside to your posed configuration when using G-SYNC. Cap away170 FPS at 240Hz has lower lag (faster frame delivery) than 170 FPS at 170Hz, for instance, due to an increased scanout speed, at least as long as you're running G-SYNC on + V-SYNC on/off or G-SYNC off + V-SYNC off (aka no sync).
This goes for any framerate on a 240Hz monitor running at a physical refresh rate of 240; the higher the current physical refresh rate, the faster the frame delivery, regardless of framerate.
Things are a little different if you're using standalone V-SYNC (G-SYNC off + V-SYNC on), but you didn't mention what you use.
