240 Hz refresh rate via Displayport 1.1a possible?

Post by reniak » 22 Nov 2021, 23:21

I’m wondering if it’s possible to reach a 240 Hz refresh rate in any way while using Displayport 1.1a.

Normally, 144 Hz is the upper limit for Displayport 1.1a.

I use Windows XP for certain games. I have modern high-end PCs, but for select old online shooters, XP is still best.

I use a Geforce 980 Ti under Windows XP for these games. It’s the most recent GPU series that has XP drivers, the Geforce 10xx series doesn’t have XP drivers.

The latest Geforce Win XP driver for the 900 series is 368.81 from July 2016. Even though Geforce 980 Ti supports Displayport 1.2 under Windows 7 and Windows 10, only Displayport 1.1a is supported under Windows XP.

Nvidia Geforce 368.81 Windows XP driver release notes: https://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/ ... pdated.pdf

By default, the highest refresh rate obtainable from a GPU that only supports Displayport 1.1a, is 144 Hz at 1920 x 1080 resolution.

From Wikipedia – Displayport: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort

(The HBR column is DP 1.1a, HBR2 is DP 1.2)

I have several 240 Hz monitors, and I've tried to set a 240 Hz refresh rate on them, using this Geforce 980 Ti rig with 368.81 driver, from within Windows XP. 240 Hz is available in the Nvidia control panel, but once 240 Hz is set, the monitor just goes black and shows no image.

I've read posts from other Win XP users, trying to run 240 Hz, and they get black screen/no image too.

In my XP setup, 144 Hz works perfectly.

I've tried to run low resolutions like 640 x 480 at 240 Hz, they give the same result, black screen/no image.

Also, I got the same result while using HDMI output from this Geforce 980 Ti under Windows XP, set to 240 Hz, black screen/no image.

I have Windows 7 and 10 installed on this PC too. Win XP, 7, 10 are installed on 3 separate SSDs on this PC. 240 Hz refresh rate works perfectly from within Win 7 and 10, but not XP.

So, the question is; is it possible in ANY way with ANY trick or sacrifice to make a 240 Hz monitor driven by a Geforce 980 Ti under Windows XP, run at a 240 Hz refresh rate?

This will be a challenging to figure out but have you tested out things like older versions of ToastyX Pixel Clock patcher?

Have you tested a lower resolution at 240Hz?

Thanks for the reply Chief, and thumbs up for a great forum.

Yes, all resolutions at 240 Hz under XP, no matter how low, results in no image.

No, I haven't tried ToastyX Pixel Clock patcher yet, but thx for the tip. Newer versions seemingly don't support Win XP. I will try to find older versions, or maybe similar apps.

I do not think Pixel Clock Patcher will work if low-resolution 240hz does not work.
