240hz to 390hz

Post by krims0n » 26 Nov 2021, 13:58

Hey guys, I've been on the fence on upgrading to a 390hz display (XV252Q.) Right now I'm currently on a PG258Q. I really like the PG258Q, but I do also like the idea of the XV252Q; due to the fact that it's 390hz and it's an IPS panel. If anyone has done the upgrade, can you give me some insight on the differences (or lack thereof.) Thanks!

Personal expiriences and thoughts. First important to remember that all of these are great and differences between them are nuanced - not huge in actual use cases indeed. Except ofcourse the fundamental difference between TN and IPS. That one is pretty major.

In this higher end LCD segment I personally think implemenation of overdrive/backlight storbing is the major difference. If you do not enjoy backlight strobing at all, then they are all kind of very similar in performance and maybe not even worth investing in the most highest end models. Because at that point it feels they all are pretty fast but also bit blurry, just to a slightly varying degree - does it matter even. Just go with well received budget 240Hz IPS at that point.

XL2456K (240Hz TN) is very good for solely gaming. Dyac still provides the best and sharpest (brightest) motion clarity I've seen to date. Suffers the usual TN problems - so if you plan to not use backlight strobing XL2456K is not a good choice imho. However if you plan to use backlight strobing and want high brightness same time, it's still the only and best choice. Extra brightness can win extra 150Hz on this case. Depending on personal preference.

MAG251RX (240Hz IPS) is a very good gaming monitor. You do get all the benefits of the IPS and if you do not use backlight strobing it's a very comparable expirience to XL2456K (or XV252Q F) without dyac. Expect much better and enjoyable overall picture quality compared to TN. Reasonably priced too. (Backlight strobing goes too dim with this one I feel.)

XV252Q F (390Hz IPS) Lot's of If's with this monitor. If it's avalible. If your machine can push 390fps solid. If your main game can support it. If you're fine with 247nit peak brightness VRB on extreme. If you can answer yes to all then yes, from my personal experience this one is overall the best. It's the overall fastest and smoothest also with VRB enabled comparable clarity to XL2456K (XL2456K is still marginally more clear and more bright).

All of the above are absolutely great and fast monitors. Changing between them gives me zero actual competitive advantage online. All are good enough for me to focus 100% on the game, perform my best and not second guess anything monitor related. Minor visual and feel differences only - investigating and nitpicking these is more of a hobby and a passion thing.

I went from AW2518H 1080p 240 Hz TN to XV252QF 1080p 390 Hz IPS. I think it was worth it. The latency on this monitor is so insanely low and the extra 150 refreshes per second are night and day if you play games at 400 FPS or more. There can be a bit more ghosting in some conditions, but I personally think the benefits outweigh the cons. I got it about two months ago. I have said this many times here before, but to me the biggest thing is that I think it has brought the worst I can play up to a better level and slightly increased the average. I don't think I've had one bad game since I got it - in any game I play.
