Software recs to create HFR video?

Discussion about 120fps HFR as well as future Ultra HFR (240fps, 480fps and 1000fps) playing back in real time on high refresh rate displays. See Ultra HFR HOWTO for bleeding edge experimentation.

Software recs to create HFR video?

Post by deetee » 15 Apr 2015, 23:17

Hi everyone I was wondering if there is a place to discuss software that can work with 120fps + video content. I'm no stranger to editing software and pipelines , also HFR research but my Pablo Rio, Davinci Resolve and Adobe CC cannot export (or in some cases, import) anything over 60fps. Maybe there is something out there that I did not know about. Are there some software recommendations anywhere here? Thanks everyone!

None of those programs work with 120fps video? Wow... I just checked and I was able to create a custom export in Sony Vegas to export the videos in 120fps.

No kidding- Sony Vegas? Yup I can confirm Pablo Rio maxes out at 60fps, I've had no luck with Resolve and Adobe has been useless. I have not tried Vegas, did you get a true 120p clip (maybe it was 119.87fps?) no varispeed but the real deal? ANd what resolution were you exporting at? Thanks for the tip, we do have Vegas somewhere around here on a station!

Yea, I just rendered 720p 120fps video. Did have to double speed a 60fps video to make it though because I don't have any 120fps material.

Under the Render As menu, when I tried to customize a Quicktime or AVI template, it maxed out at 59.94 for me. I wasn't able to find 720p at 120 or see higher than 59.94 in the menu. What is your secret? :D

I'm not at my computer right now but i just typed in 120 in the fps text area in the custom menu, also i was encoding in like "Sony MP4" or something like that, basically h264. Maybe AVI has a hard limit of like 60fps? idk.

OK I had a look at the many settings Sony Vegas offers, and indeed there is one place, and one place only where you can export a true 120fps video (or 119.87) .

Under Render As, selecting MainConcept AVC/AAC (*.mp4, *.avc) brings up a setting called "Sony Tablet 1080p". I customized this template, and as you said lexlazootin I manually typed in 120.000. Both "Allow source to adjust frame size" and "allow source to adjust frame rate" MUST be unchecked. Checking them will result in a 29.97p video.

I opened the resulting video in Quicktime, and indeed it shows the fps as 120. Fantastic! Now its just a matter of changing the Variable bit rate settings to be ideal for 120fps playback. I wish that Quad HD was allowed in those settings, but it is not. Honestly I am happy just to get 1080p120 so no complaints here. I can post screenshots if anyone is curious. I know it is now relatively easy to get 120fps or higher playback on displays, but making video content yourself and edited is a whole different matter.
