To all the camera enthusiasts, and anyone else who's interested, Panasonic has announced its latest Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera, the GH5S.

Two of its features which have me quite interested are its 120Hz viewfinder and its ability to record 1080p at 240fps.

Though obviously pricey, compared to what its competition offers, this is actually somewhat of a bargain. To my knowledge, no $2000 - $3000 Olympus, Sony, Nikon, or Canon ILC has 1080p 240fps, 4K 60fps, 422 10-bit internal, and the ability to switch between 59.94Hz NTSC, 50.00Hz PAL, and 24.00Hz Cinema.

The closest competition is the Blackmagic URSA Mini 4K, which costs $3000 body only, and with batteries, a lens, and memory cards, would end up costing well over $4000.

Low light performance also said to rival full frame cameras like the Sony A7R. Of course with 10.2mp, it won't be a great stills camera but GH series have always been about video. Have a GH4, skipped the GH5 but maybe not this one. You can end up paying ridonkulous amounts of money for minor improvements and proprietary solutions in the camera world. These cameras are probably a comparative bargain.

The GH5 is my first ILC, and so far, in conjunction with ffmpeg and DaVinci Resolve 14 Studio, it produces good real time 120fps videos. Currently I only have 4 (arguably mediocre [trying to self-train in cinematography]) such videos which I would like to upload to the internet soon. Since 120fps is only available in VFR, which I believe is limited to a 420 8-bit format more compressed than the camera's non-VFR 420 8-bit, there are still noticeable moire, aliasing, and blocking artifacts. The fact that ffmpeg further compresses the footage probably doesn't help. Hopefully Panasonic implements my idea of adding 120fps, 119.88fps, and 100fps as project frame rates in a future GH5/GH5S firmware update and/or future GH models.

What does 120fps real time look like over 60fps video. Also, how do you play back, because not many TVs accept 120fps. Or VFR content.

For static shots there’s only minimal difference over 60fps, but with motion there’s noticeable difference. The difference increases with speed and amount of motion.

Currently I just watch them on my 120Hz laptop, but the newest iPad Pro is capable of displaying 120fps and a few upcoming LG TVs will be able to display 120fps.
