The beating of the horse continues - X1X 1440p/120hz

All newer XBOX consoles supports 120Hz+ & FreeSync. Getting help with getting "Better Than 60Hz" on the XBOX ONE, XBOX Series S, and XBOX Series X, as well as the PlayStation 5.

The beating of the horse continues - X1X 1440p/120hz

Post by jstinnette » 15 Jan 2020, 10:00

I am a pc and xbox gamer. When MS announced 120 hz support I was ecstatic as my monitor at the time was a dell 144hz 1440p. Alas, this monitor only has an hdmi 1.4 input and not 2.0. Long story short, I had just purchased the monitor for my pc and was not interested in replacing it at that time. Fast forward to now and I am tired of experiencing high refresh gaming on my pc only to go to my 1x and get smacked in the eyes with 60hz. Especially since the 1x supports 120hz and they have had a while to work out any kinks. Should be pretty easy to find a compatible monitor? That's a BIG NOPE.

So I researched and researched and researched and after all that research this is what I know to be true:

1. The monitor must have an hdmi 2.0 input to support the 120hz refresh rate.
2. The monitor must support freesync over hdmi in order for vrr to work.

(and this is the biggest one)

3. There seems to be absolutely ZERO consistency between people with the same monitor getting these features to work. One person will while the other one won't be able to at all.

So I researched some more and bought this unit: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CY ... UTF8&psc=1

I bought this ONLY after I saw it confirmed at two separate sources online (xbox forums and YT comments). I got the monitor yesterday and hooked it up and what do you know.....I can get 120 at 1080 and only 60 at 1440. On top of that, I can only get the VRR option to show up if I set the video to auto-detect settings within the xbox video options. WTH!!?!?!?!!!

I am beyond frustrated at this point. This should not be that difficult. I am not opposed to returning this and trying another unit that has be "known to work" but at this point I don't feel like I can trust anything. Getting these features to work seems to be completely hit or miss even with the same model.

Does anyone have any experience with this model or have any general thoughts / insight?

Not necessarily. HDMI is a bit bucket budget -- any 4K 60 Hz connection (single link) can support 1080p 120Hz, 144Hz and 240Hz if the monitor's HDMI transciever chip and GPU's HDMI transceiver chip supports it, even if it's HDMI 1.x (1.3 or 1.4).

It is true that 2.0 makes it more compatible and more reliably available. However, there are instances of 120 Hz support with less than HDMI 2.0.

But not with the 1x afaik? With the 1x you have to have 2.0 for 1440/120.

In any case I got it working last night!

X1X needs 2.0 for 1440/120.

While one loves to knock consoles, please be reminded that the Consoles Forum is a Safe Zone.

We respect consoles that join the high-Hz race and Blur Busters' job is to help lift all boats in the Refresh Rate Race.

High Hz FTW!

Welcome. While I'm a member of the PCMR, there's respect here from me. The Consoles forum is a safe zone.

Agreed, keep the PCMR rivalry outside the Consoles forum.
