LG C9 BFI at 120 hz

High Hz on OLED produce excellent strobeless motion blur reduction with fast GtG pixel response. It is easier to tell apart 60Hz vs 120Hz vs 240Hz on OLED than LCD, and more visible to mainstream. Includes WOLED and QD-OLED displays.

LG C9 BFI at 120 hz

Post by naylord » 01 Feb 2024, 17:52

Hello,

My main display is a LG C9. I've heard mixed reviews on it's BFI implementation, dubbed "OLED Motion" in the settings but I love it. For 60hz content it's the only reason why I didn't throw this display in the garbage and dig out my old panasonic plasma to return as my daily driver.

The display does support 120hz. At that refresh rate stop and hold blur, while perceptible is definitely low enough for me to be fine with it. Though I notice, that BFI is still an option when I am inputting a 120hz signal. I've read that this display is only supposed to have BFI at 60hz and when in 120hz mode, the option should be greyed out and unselecatble (this is the case when running VRR).
So I'm wondering what is happening exactly. The brightness drops, as expected when turning on BFI. My phone camera will show the BFI shutters scrolling down so there are black frames being inserted. I guess the question I'm wondering is: is this display showing me all 120 frames of content input in and also showing 120 frames of black? Or is it now just showing me 60 frames out of the 120 being input, and discarding half of them?

I'm finding it tough to tell by eye. I'd love to know for sure but I don't have a high speed camera to see if there's all 120 distinct frames still there. Does anyone else here have an LG C9 and a high speed camera to be able to verify?

Thank you

I don't have a C9 so am not 100% sure, but I do have the C1 aka the last LG OLED to do 120hz BFI. The CX certainly has it to. I assume yours does.

I heard that about the C1 as well, but what I also heard was that the CX was the first to do 120hz BFI. I believe the C9 was the first LG OLED with BFI at all and reviews I've read stated it was 60 hz.
Researching it has proven really unfruitful. Any other forum or tech article basically doesn't know what BFI is. Like if I asked about this in an AV forum or oled subreddit people would either not know what it is or complain that I'd have the audacity to ruin the impact of HDR.

isnt it true, that only the CX has true 120Hz BFI?
the C1 and C2 supposedly only have 60Hz BFI dont they?

C1 also has 120 Hz BFI. But its 60 Hz BFI mode is brighter at the cost of being slightly blurrier. It was too dim on the CX.

120 Hz BFI disappeared the next year, with the C2 and all other OLED from all other manufacturers.

If you would have to buy a oled right now, would you avoid all the new ones due to lack of bfi and just go for a C1 or CX used in good condition?

One question about it disappearing in terms of UX, is the option simply greyed out when on 120 hz content, or can you engage it, but it's running at 60 hz and thus just throwing out half of your frames?
I'm just wondering if people know what the standard is on current displays as I feel like that's a clue as to what might be happening on my C9

I don't think so, because while lack of 120 Hz BFI is clearly a step backward, i prefer having a brighter 60 Hz BFI because this is my main refresh rate for games and by far.

Still a bummer nonetheless for older games or not too demanding graphically wise and even competitive ones as having a clear vision is essential to spot enemies more easily.

But if i had to choose between a CX and a C1, i would go for the second, because the 60 Hz BFI mode of the first is way too dim.

While i value clear motion like everyone else here, it's not a the cost of a severe brightness loss.
I don't mind the visible flickering effect at this refresh rate, it's very similar to a CRT's.
But a dull image, no.

Greyed out most likely.

I don't think i've understood your issue with the C9.

as we watch tv / games only in a fully darken room and light is a no issue for us, would the CX with full 120Hz suffice brightnesswise in a full darkened room?
