LG 27GS95QE gamma issue @60 FPS/Hz

High Hz on OLED produce excellent strobeless motion blur reduction with fast GtG pixel response. It is easier to tell apart 60Hz vs 120Hz vs 240Hz on OLED than LCD, and more visible to mainstream. Includes WOLED and QD-OLED displays.

LG 27GS95QE gamma issue @60 FPS/Hz

Post by abyssent » 29 Sep 2024, 09:09

Hi,
I recently bought the LG 27GS95QE and I'm experiencing this strange situation. With VRR/Gsync ON when a game runs at steady 60 FPS the image becomes washed. This is particularly visibile in dark games like Amnesia, where you can cleary see that the image is not looking right.

Image

If I disable VRR/Gsync the image change. The rocks in the background don't have that weird whashed look anymore.

Image

This also happen in games that run at 240FPS. If I cap the FPS with Rivaturner the image become more washed at 120 FPS and 60FPS, compared to 240 FPS.

I'm using the monitor in Gamer 1 mode and I've tryed a different PC with the same result. I knew about VRR flicker, but this is new to me. Is it normal or my panel is faulty?

This is normal with OLED. The lower the refresh rate, the lower the gamma gets. You can increase the gamma value in the OSD to compensate. Or in the nvidia control panel for finer adjustments.

So it's best to aim for a specific frame rate and cap to that. Don't let your FPS vary too much in games.

(This is the cause of OLED VRR flicker, btw. When FPS fluctuates, gamma fluctuates with it, and t hat makes it look flickery.)

The fps are not fluctuating in my case, they are stable at 60. Some indie or older games don't allow more than 60 fps so this is very annoying.
Gamma setting (Mode 1,2,3,4) in the monitor OSD doesn't do much. There is a Black Stabilizer setting that I don't know what it does. I'll try lowering the gamma through nvidia control panel.

This makes things worse by washing out dark colors on purpose to gain an advantage in competitive shooters. (It makes enemies easier to see if they're in dark areas by making those dark areas become brighter):
