Linux/BSD: Wayland, Xorg, and different DDX drivers?

Post by Espionage724 » 13 Mar 2025, 15:18

A few days ago I was on FreeBSD Xfce with Xorg and Intel DDX no problem. I switched to modesetting, and although the desktop felt and looked relatively the same, I got significant eyestrain within a few minutes.

I can't quite rule out bad timing or coincidence, but I'm wondering if modesetting path adds latency? Theoretically I imagine it does since modesetting's generic 2D-accel to OpenGL whereas specific DDX drivers are hardware-tuned (like Intel with UXA/SNA).

I'm curious if anyone else experimented with this or has any info?
