RetroArch and VLC media player for enable BFI at 100Hz

Ask about motion blur reduction in gaming monitors. Includes ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), NVIDIA LightBoost, ASUS ELMB, BenQ/Zowie DyAc, ToastyX, black frame insertion (BFI), and now framerate-based motion blur reduction (framegen / LSS / etc).

RetroArch and VLC media player for enable BFI at 100Hz

Post by nuninho1980 » 26 Jul 2025, 09:25

Hello. :)

Does RetroArch support VLC media player and other media players (eg: MPC HC...) for watch 50fps videos at 100Hz with BFI (Black Frame Insertion) enabled?

If "yes", I will buy new Viewsonic XG2431 24.5" monitor and I'll watch videos or live TV at 1920x1080@100Hz + BFI enabled ( = 50Hz guest).

I'm using still old CRT monitor 19". :)

PS: Because "ShaderGlass" tool may not work to enable BFI.

Best regards. ;)

I can't speak to that combination but I can forsee some difficulties with the video player outputting a recognizable framerate based on the source video framerate. Further complications will be created if you don't set the display to run at 100Hz. You might be able to test support on your CRT just to see if the software works.

My Vint software supports multiple forms of BFI out of the box including CRT emulation. Vint outputs a variable refresh rate signal so your 240Hz monitor will automatically switch to 100Hz for a 1:1 BFI 50FPS input video as well as 120Hz for a 1:1 BFI 60Hz video seamlessly.

All CRT monitors should work 50Hz (but some CRT monitors' brands (eg: NEC...) not 50Hz)!!!

ULMB2 monitors work single-strobe 50Hz and ASUS brand with ULMB2 is best but this brand costs still expensive, unfortunately.

I would try Vint software... but I get confusion for no demo. But the sw isn't for watch "live" TV because this is encoder only!?

I'll try RetroArch to see if VLC media player is supported or not...

Odd that a CRT would be able to not support certain refresh rates.

So Vint supports any sort of video stream whether that is from a video file, an encoded online stream like twitch, or a local UVC connection like a video capture card.

Vint doesn't have a demo because it's a DRM free software. Once you have the software, it's yours. You can copy and modify it anyway you see fit. I cannot time limit it or revoke access or change any behavior without active user update. Steam does offer a generous refund policy if you are unsatisfied for any reason.

I'm interested to see how RetroArch works for you.

Under "RetroArch", I tried to install DLLs of VLC in Load Core but I can't appear VLC app at left bottom side of "Explore"... How do we run VLC app?
