Inverse Ghosting on 144hz 3D Acer Monitor

Ask about motion blur reduction in gaming monitors. Includes ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), NVIDIA LightBoost, ASUS ELMB, BenQ/Zowie DyAc, Turbo240, ToastyX Strobelight, etc.

Inverse Ghosting on 144hz 3D Acer Monitor

Post by badinek » 10 Mar 2023, 12:40

Hello,
I bought an used 144hz monitor and Im experiencing "inverse ghosting" on it. The model is GN246HL ( https://store.acer.com/en-ca/24-3d-monitor-gn246hl ) and is quite old.
I read that inverse ghosting can be fixed by disabling "overdrive" in the monitor settings, however this is not possible on this model.
The monitor has a "LightBoost" setting but I cant seem to interact with it. The only thing I can toggle is "3D notifications". Im sending a picture of the settings in attachments.
I have emailed Mark Rejhon about this issue and he told me to use "Toastyx Strobelight" program to turn on the LightBoost, unfortunately the monitor I have doesnt seem to be supported on the program so its giving me a "no compatible displays found" message.

Could anyone please tell me if theres any program which I could use to get rid of the issue? I would appreciate it.
Im also sending my computers specs in the attachments if it helps.

According to the RTINGs review, the overshoot is not correctable on this model:
https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/ ... 246hl-bbid
The Acer GN246HL gaming monitor has an excellent native response time but there is a lot of overshoot which causes a visible corona effect to the left of the motion blur logo. Unfortunately, the overdrive is not customizable and the overshoot cannot be reduced.

Not that I know of; if there was software that could modify the overdrive presets of random monitors, it would be well known and used by many already.

Only other option would be the service menu, but someone else already tried this, and there were no overdrive settings available there either:

The overshoot is apparently a well known issue for this model:

Nevermind guys! The program I was sent (Toastyx Strobelight) actually fixed it for me! Its now 120Hz instead of 144hz but I can barely tell anyway. It looks like the program enabled the "NVIDIA 3D" option in the monitor settings somehow and set the slider to max.

Oh, I see. You were trying to force Lightboost (strobing) because it reduces the appearance of overshoot on this particular model.

RTINGS mentioned that in their review as well:
https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/ ... 246hl-bbid
The Acer GN246HL Bbid uses PWM to reduce the backlight, and there is flicker at all brightness levels.

There is an optional BFI mode that reduces the flicker frequency to improve motion with 3D content. This feature uses NVIDIA's 3D Lightboost technology. It is possible to modify the system to use this technology all the time. BlurBusters.com has an excellent article that covers how to activate BFI on a Lightboost monitor.

When activated there is a significant change to the color temperature (it is too warm) and this can't be changed. The contrast slider becomes 42 by default, and when raised colors are clipped. Since the BFI mode turns the backlight off for longer periods of time the overall brightness of the screen is significantly reduced to 121 cd/m². The contrast ratio is also reduced to 786 due to the change in colors and contrast slider. The contrast can be adjusted in BFI mode but causes more clipping.
Seems to also have some downsides, but at least it mitigates the overdrive issue.
