240hz or 144hz with BFI

Post by yungstudent » 14 May 2023, 21:58

Hi,

Ignoring the price difference..

I am stuck in between choosing the Samsung Neo G8 (240hz VA) and the Gigabyte M32U (144hz IPS + BFI).

The G8 is 240hz, but doesnt have any BFI. The M32U is 144hz but does have BFI. The M32U is better at motion blur handling as it is an IPS panel.

Ignoring price, which one should I choose?

It depends on your priorities.

But bear this out -- current GPUs are going to have difficulty doing 240fps at 4K in gaming situations. Factor this into your decision.

You'll still see and feel the difference in plain scrolling situations (e.g. browser) but the 240Hz+VA may not be as efficient as 144Hz+IPS (Even non-BFI) in dark-material motion handling. The best motion clarity per frame will likely favor the Gigabyte, but there are some pluses of the Neo G8 too as well, being a VA panel that may be preferable for movie watching and other stuff you might do with the monitor.

You may also want to consider 1440p 240Hz OLED options, if you want a good balance between resolution and motion handling. Comparing 144Hz vs 240Hz is quite noticeably more visible on OLED than on LCD.
