Acer VRB and refresh rate headroom

Ask about motion blur reduction in gaming monitors. Includes ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), NVIDIA LightBoost, ASUS ELMB, BenQ/Zowie DyAc, Turbo240, ToastyX Strobelight, etc.

Acer VRB and refresh rate headroom

Post by strayan » 23 Nov 2023, 20:53

I’m about to pull the trigger on a Acer Nitro 38.5in WQHD VA 170Hz panel to use in combination with the Retrotink 4k scaler and as a replacement for a 32inch CRT.

The Retrotink4k can output 2560x1440@120 with software BFI which I believe might pair well with Acer VRB backlight strobing.

Is 170Hz sufficient headroom for 120Hz BFI?

Is the VA panel just going to be too slow?

Thought I might ask here first.

I am loathe to provide advice on VA panels with strobing and BFI due to this.
On the other hand, very few options at 38.5 inches.

If you give this a try, please let us know if it works well.

Have you considered a 42" OLED instead? 120Hz OLED outperforms 170Hz LCD anyway.

Also, 180Hz BFI is better than 120Hz BFI, because you can reduce motion blur by 66% instead of just 50%.

120Hz ... Use BFI to reduce 60Hz blur by 50%
180Hz ... Use BFI to reduce 60Hz blur by 66%
240Hz ... Use BFI to reduce 60Hz blur by 75%

Formula for maximal blur reduction is (DestHz/OrigHz), for 1 visible frame followed by series of black frames, as per variable-persistence BFI, https://www.testufo.com/blackframes#count=4&bonusufo=1 (view at 240Hz, but you can get a kind of a slow-mo idea at 60Hz).

Cheers, I might give it a try and report back (although probably not until I get my hands on a Retrotink4k).

I am very interested in an OLED TV as I already have a couple of OLED PVMs but I wanted to hold off until they get brighter and/or at least have better support for BFI.
