27GP850-B for Valorant?

Post by kaivorth » 03 Jan 2024, 23:10

So I've been on the hunt for the best monitor for this game without spending an arm and an leg. I spent $230 on this monitor and I've been playing with the settings.

I've been playing back and forth with the following settings:

165hz w/ BFI

180hz no BFI w/ extended adaptive sync (whatever that means)

After a few hours on both settings, for me, it's no contest,180hz is better, but everything I've read and seen, is that the BFI should be better. I feel like I'm just a little bit behind on my shots, compared to no BFI. Almost like there is a bigger penalty to input lag or something?

Anybody else have any experience with this monitor and can share some knowledge or maybe I have something else wrong? Even the UFO tests show a much smoother image with BFI on. I just felt like I was dying before I had a chance to react to anything with BFI. With it off, I felt like I had a noticeable advantage.

Besides DyAc on Zowie, ULMB 2.0 on some recent monitors, and a few exceptions like VG2431, BFI is usually not worth using. On your monitor its implementation seems very poor, dropping brightness to a ridiculous 136 nits, leading to duplicate images, and adding +1ms of input lag. So yes it should definitely be better to use this monitor at 180Hz without BFI.

On an other note, if your plan is to play games like Valorant you really should have go for a 240+Hz monitor.

Do you have a specific next monitor in mind I should really be looking at then? Ideally 1440p catered for Valorant

I was looking at OLEDs also but figured I'd wait for the new panels

I thought I looked at rtings and I think they said bfi introduced like 0.5ms of input delay. I didn't think it would be very significant. It seems bright enough for me, I never noticed double images or anything, but obviously something is off for me.

4.4ms with BFI, 3.6ms without according to rtings, not that big but still there. And BFI on this monitor seems badly managed, really bad and insufficient brightness, duplicate image as stated by rtings : "Like all monitors with BFI, enabling this feature causes some duplications in motion, as seen to the left of our moving logo image.".

Will depend on your budget, cheapest 1440p 240Hz would be M27QX or AW2723DF. Then you have monitors like Asus XG27AQM or the best one PG27AQN.
Still, if you mainly play and invest on games like Valorant I would suggest to stick with 1080p 25" and eventually consider the upcoming 540Hz if you want an optimal experience.

Thoughts on the Acer Predator X27U vs XG27AQM/PG27AQN?

You mean the OLED 1440p 27" from Acer ? According to rtings, its not the best OLED atm, in particular pretty high input lag (3ms) for a 240Hz. Generally speaking, can't recommend OLED for competitive gaming like Valorant, because brightness on current OLED displays is mediocre (211 nits for this monitor), and 360+Hz LCDs with BFI remain way better motion clarity wise.
If you want the best 1440p for competitive games, PG27AQN is the best. You could wait the upcoming OLEDs with 360+Hz this rate, but it is unlikely that the brightness will be improved.

I wasn't sure what was going to be more important, pixel response time (which the predator seemed to be the best) and or input delay

And also at which point is each statistic diminishing returns

It does seem to make more sense to focus on input delay though..

The 27in Asus OLED is locally for sale for $700 I've been eye balling. That one hits 2.5ms

The IPS one you mentioned is $800 and I don't see any locally.

Then Zowie is coming out with DYAC 2 this month so I'll see what's up with that one when reviews are available
