BenQ XL2420Z vs BenQ XL2430T

Ask about motion blur reduction in gaming monitors. Includes ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), NVIDIA LightBoost, ASUS ELMB, BenQ/Zowie DyAc, Turbo240, ToastyX Strobelight, etc.

BenQ XL2420Z vs BenQ XL2430T

Post by squad » 21 Apr 2015, 22:36

Yeah I know another one of these but I really do need help. I want to purchase one today or tomorrow. I was wondering that the XL2420Z is 319 right now on newegg with free shipping and the XL2430T is 380 plus 8 dollars shipping. Which one should I go for. Is some of the futures that XL2430T worth the upgrade or I'm fine with the older XL2420Z?

Any help would be great!!!

I don't blame you for finding it confusing because it totally is. The 30T has a few extra features such as Color Vibrance which is nice but can be done in your graphics driver and "Automatic Brightness Adjustments" which is total crap.

Also a few design changes such as a different and new S-switch, measurements for monitor adjustments and a side headphone hanger.

It's a pretty meh upgrade and i wish Benq took more time adding and perfecting stuff before throwing up a new monitor. I want to know if they fix the terrO-Bad overdrive they had in the 20Z because if they did it would be a worthy upgrade but it's impossible to tell because their advertising team sucks a big one. :D

I heard the 30T has Black eQualizer 2.0 and Motion Blur Reduction 2.0... verison 2.0 of those things and are they better than v 1.0 that 2430Z has?

Black eQualizer 2.0 is auto brightness which is something you don't want at all... you will be playing a dark game and all of a sudden "eQualizer 2.0" will kick in and turn down the brightness for more "Dynamic Range!" and you wont be able to see.

Blur Reduction 2.0 I believe just lets your adjust the settings inside of the monitors factory screen or what ever it's called instead of using the program BlurBusters made.

2430T's overdrive quality in blur reduction mode should be better than 2420Z's default blur reduction quality. If it's identical to V4 firmware, then 2430T's overdrive/AMA high should look identical to 2411Z's "hidden" AMA high setting in V4 firmware. Two people posted pictures of a pursuit camera from testUFO and it definitely looked better. It also works with the same Vertical Total tweaks too, so I'd say yes it's worth it.

I got a question tho, the 30T doesnt have lightboost because it doesn't have nvidia 3d. Doesn't that mean 2420z is better because it can do lightboost which is like a CRT responds time? Am I missing something? Thank you.

I answered this on OCN.
Lightboost was the predecessor to benq blur reduction and the Gsync equivalent of ULMB, and was designed originally for 3D shutter glasses. Lightboost support is not necessary or required on any Z series monitor flashed to V4 firmware (I do not know if the XL2730Z freesync monitor supports Lightboost or not) as strobing overdrive re-adjustments on V4 improve the Benq's blur reduction to near lightboost levels of quality. It's benq blur reduction (And ULMB for Gsync boards, or Turbo 240 for Eizo/LG monitors) that improve the motion blur response to CRT type levels.

The XL2430T does not have Lightboost, nor does it need it. Companies have to pay Nvidia royalties to include 3d vision 2 support. Most likely Benq chose not to pay it. Instead it has blur reduction 2.0, so you can adjust strobe phase and strobe duty directly in the OSD itself. "Single strobe" enforcing still must be changed in the service menu (this enables single strobe at 60hz refresh rate, for 60 hz locked games and for game consoles, etc), and custom strobe adjustments at non standard refresh rates via custom resolutions, like 75 hz, 91 hz, 85 hz, etc)

Thanks for the information Falkentyne. Have there been any tests that show Benq's blur reduction performs the same as lightboost?

Both MBR and Lightboost have negligible amounts of input lag.
With version 4 firmware installed and the new AMA high toggle mode used, 2411z, and 2420z and 2720z (2720z does not need this toggle on v4) perform to equal or better than lightboost, if a vertical total 1500 tweak is used. V2 firmware is worse than V4. The overdrive is too excessive.
