ASUS VG279QM ELMB and settings

Ask about motion blur reduction in gaming monitors. Includes ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), NVIDIA LightBoost, ASUS ELMB, BenQ/Zowie DyAc, Turbo240, ToastyX Strobelight, etc.

ASUS VG279QM ELMB and settings

Post by Otzl » 27 Feb 2020, 07:39

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone else has this monitor and if so, what settings they use? The Viewsonic XG270 is more expensive and difficult to buy (at least in the UK), so I thought I would get this monitor for a better price to replace my Alienware AW2518HF. As you can imagine, I was hoping for better motion clarity and maybe something to fix ugly aliasing and pixel inversion artifacts. Unfortunately the pixel density means I still have ugly aliasing in some cases, especially with shadows. Oh well, I guess I can live with it. As long as I can get good motion clarity.

Does anyone know how this panel compares to the Viewsonic XG270? How can I get the best possible motion clarity on this monitor?

I've tried ELMB-Sync on with 120Hz/V-Sync On in Battlefield V, but I'm not blown away with the results. If anyone can help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm really not sure how to get the best results with this monitor. Happy with the image, but I'm struggling to get the best motion clarity. It probably doesn't help that I don't understand the tech much, but I've tried setting native refresh rates to 144, 120, 100, etc. Lowering it from 280Hz to these refresh rates and trying out the UFO test shows ghosting and crosstalk. 280Hz on the UFO test shows blurry UFOs with small amounts of crosstalk, a marginal improvement over 280Hz and no ELMB. I'd take pictures but my phone camera isn't good enough.

So playing games at a variable refresh rate with ELMB on seems to marginally improve motion clarity, but it's barely noticeable and makes the picture slightly darker anyway. My 5700 XT isn't capable of a consistent 144+ FPS in AAA titles, which is why I was looking to get crystal-clear zero-blur lower refresh rates. Can I do a vertical total edit or something? What number would I use? With all this Hz headroom, there must be a way...

I would say check around first to learn how strobing backlight works and what fps and settings you should have for it to work properly.
There is a https://blurbusters.com/faq/motion-blur-reduction/ and it was explained repeatedly in other threads here.

I'd be able to find out for myself if I was actually able to tweak the settings somehow. Turns out even though ELMB-sync is SUPPOSED to be used with adaptive sync, the former can be used without the latter. Again, it doesn't explain why I get serious ghosting at lower refresh rates. It also only works with fixed refresh rates such as 144Hz, 240 and 280. I tried creating custom resolutions of 100 and 120 Hz, but ELMB turns off.

If you mean overshoot with ELMB-Sync on, then I suggest to wait for TFTCentrals review to go public, where it is explained.
