ToastyX/ strobelight.exe - "No compatible displays found."?

Post by supai » 28 Apr 2014, 14:50

Hi friends,

i m sorry, but i don't have a clue what happend when i accidently unplugged my monitor power cable and now strobelight.exe does not find a "supported monitor" any more - i was already successfully using ToastyX's Strobe Utility on a Acer HN274H B (with NVidia Lightboost) for quite a while now. I ve used the CRU tool for another monitor but that was a while ago too, should not have interfered. Using AMD cards only but Lightboost "is active" as far as i can see from the burnt in menu. I have had servere problems to get the strobelight.exe working before but back then "lightboost" was not shown active in the monitor menu, if that is related at all. Win7 SP1, latest AMD drivers, was working until I unplugged power cable once. Weird.

I tried everything I found in this forum already, I doubt reinstalling AMD drivers would make a difference, here is a c&p from my debug file:

Strobelight does not support Acer displays. It only supports ASUS and BENQ.

Did it work before in the past?

Yes it was working fine for me, I have no idea how i got it running, but it worked really fine, i was able to adjust lightboost through the strobelight.exe. Can't you just unlock the vendor ID for that purpose for me? :D

However, when i have AERO running and have open an app on the 2nd monitor, encounter motion blur at testufo, but this issue might have existed before, cause I had to disable AERO when playing on 4 screens for cap frame rate (otherwise it was halved for every extra monitor when AERO is active)

My friend, ToastyX, is the writer of the utility. Ask him in the forum at http://www.monitortests.com that you still want to use the strobelight utility to turn ON/OFF LightBoost after manually activating LightBoost via a different means (e.g. 3D Vision, etc). That should work, even if LightBoost initialization may not work, the LightBoost adjustment should still technically work.

He must have released a newer version of Strobelight that had more rigorous vendor checks.

However i still use the same version of the program which it was working with before (and that was just yesterday!) after all i didn't change anything with the setup, at all, i just unplugged the power cable when streching my legs too much and after that i never was able to load strobelight.exe fully again and this was the case some months ago too, when i installed it -- had no idea how i was able to make it run and now i just have no idea why it cheased to function and how i can get it back working, but when you say it shouldn't work with Acer at all, I can assure it was working with an Acer for at least some weeks. Checked all other cables etc. As long as I can have lightboost active all times, which seems to be the case, it is not so bad, just weird.

Of course there is just two types of errors, systematic ones and random ones. I must have had a random error that made it possible to load the program with an Acer display. But when the screen lost all power for some time, I did lose my ability to load the program with it. That is my best guess.

Strobelight does not support Acer monitors. The only way it could have worked before is if you unlocked 3D mode with an NVIDIA card using the 3D Vision setup wizard. Then Strobelight will work with the Acer as long as 3D mode stays unlocked. Unplugging the monitor while it's powered on resets the lock.

Alright, then this is what happend. Thanks for clearing things up mate. Doesn't matter now - as long as my lazy strobelights are kicking blur's ass. But it's weeks ago when I kicked the last NVidia Card out of the main machine. Guess I'll unlock again with a 2nd machine just to have your little lightbulb in my taskbar. NOT.
