Good News Everyone: 60Hz Single Strobe Options

Good News Everyone

Image

I've managed to move the industry needle a little bit. People have long been whining, "Please Add 60 Hz Single-Strobe". It flickers badly like a CRT but some of you still love the nostagilia CRT-clarity zero-blur at 60 Hz refresh rate for video, for sports, for emulators and/or for gaming consoles limited to 60 Hz. And we know framerate=Hz is a requirement from the CRT Nirvana Guide for Disappointed CRT-to-LCD Upgraders. And that's tough when framerate is 60 frames per second.

This is a sideways movement, a feature-addition to accomodate additional specialized use cases:
  • 60fps videos
  • Emulators
  • Gaming Consoles
  • Improve accuracy of CRT tube simulators (CRT filters)
Official Blur Busters 60Hz Single Strobe List

These current & upcoming displays support 60Hz single-strobe for users who want CRT motion clarity for:
  1. Oculus Quest 2 + 60 Hz Mode + Virtual Desktop app
This is the best CRT motion clarity LCD I have ever seen, zero strobe crosstalk, and OLED quality colors. Switch its 72 Hz refresh rate to 60 Hz via instructions, and now you're ready for emulator action, including MAME HLSL running on a PC, wirelessly transmitting to a virtual floating "CRT" hovering in front of you. Can wirelessly stream a Virtual Desktop to your headset cordlessly, the Oculus Link cable is optional if you are near your WiFi 5/6 router (11ac or better). 0.3ms MPRT while staying plenty bright, it is shorter-persistence than many medium-persistence CRT tubes.
    Amazon: Oculus Quest 2
Cons: Won't work with gaming consoles, has a very slight latency (~20ms)
    .
  2. Upcoming Blur Busters Approved Version 2.0 Monitors in 2021+
ViewSonic XG2431 supports single strobe, and a few other Blur Busters Approved Certification Version 2.0 monitors supports 60 Hz single-strobe. It is a mandatory criteria of Blur Busters Approved 2.0 in year 2021 onwards.
    .
  3. BenQ XL2411 Series
The long-time old 60 Hz single strobe standby, many BenQ XL2411 series (XL2411, XL2411T, XL2411P, XL2411) support 60 Hz single strobe, as does certain other models (XL2420, XL2720). (Further testing is needed on XL2411K to determine its capabilities).
    Amazon: BenQ XL2411P
    Cons: Old TN panel technology
    .
  4. Upcoming Eve IPS monitors (4K 144Hz and 1440p 240Hz)
In an unofficial capacity I am now helping Eve with their strobing. In full equality, I help any manufacturer that asks for help about strobing. Big and small. Well financed or strapped startups. Rising tide lifts all boats, I say! Capable of 60 Hz single strobing, both with PCs/consoles.
    Amazon: Not available until 2021
    Cons: KSF phosphor, but tolerable
    .
  5. Upcoming big-company monitor (unannounced)
It's a 1440p 165Hz Fast IPS panel, capable of 60 Hz single strobing too, both with PCs/consoles. I will disclose the brand once it hits the market.
    Cons: KSF phosphor, but tolerable
    .
  6. LG CX-Series 4K 120Hz G-SYNC OLEDs, 48", 55", 65"
The 48" and 55" models make amazing big-screen computer monitors at 1-meter viewing distance. Such bliss when running 60fps console games and/or emulator games. Configure "OLED Motion Pro" maximum setting. 60Hz single-strobe and 120Hz single-strobe options. LOWER your brightness a lot, to prevent 60Hz flicker headaches, CRT tubes were not this big in the old era.
    Amazon: LG CX-Series OLED Televisions
Cons: Large screen than most CRTs, and a bit higher latency

Thanks !

Eve single strobing minimum is 60Hz, or is unlocked ? Europe video streaming without HFR is still 50p 25i, require 50Hz like in CRT for the best motion. Is interesting have the option to test it, and user choice, flicker with 50Hz or double image with 100Hz.

With Eve should be highlighted the integer scaling ! This allow 4K monitor at 4K or FHD, both completely sharp, native pixels, non interpolated. This has much importance for instance console gamers that want buy PS5 for 4K, but want also enjoy old FHD consoles. I not know if LG CX apply integer scaling when receive FHD signals. Also 60Hz single strobe input lag sure is much less on these Eve monitors Vs 31ms of LG TV at 60Hz BFI High.

There are several versions of LG OLED48CX, at least these:

OLED48CX5LC
OLED48CX6LA
OLED48CX6LB
OLED48CX9LB
OLED48CXPUA
OLED48CXPUB

If anyone can tell us the differences, it would be greatly appreciated.

OLED rolling scan help reduce flicker, this need to be highlighted in this 60Hz anti motion blur thread. LG OLED maybe can also do BFI at 50 and 100Hz, not only 60 120, at least with Europe version of this TV to enjoy 50p 100p sports streaming.

Hope LG continue approaching OLED more to PC, and finally release OLED Gaming Monitors, without SmartTV, raw OLED speed focused to get the lowest possible input lag, race to eSports 1000Hz, added DisplayPort, true RGB pixels, unlocked brightness mode.

Waiting also news about MicroLED to maintain/improve OLED specs reducing burn in risk !

HOWTO: Use Oculus Quest 2 VR Headset as 60 Hz Single Strobe Monitor
for non-VR Gaming / Emulators / Videos

1. Get an Oculus Quest or Quest 2 VR headset (latter is GREATLY superior)
2. Purchase "Virtual Desktop" from Oculus store
3. Install "Virtual Desktop Streamer" on PC, configure it to H.EVC codec
4. Install SideQuest from www.sidequestvr.com because you need to sideload the 60Hz refresh rate
5. Install "Virtual Desktop VR Patch" via SideQuest appstore.
6. Reboot the headset.
7. 60 Hz single-strobe refresh rate becomes available in Virtual Desktop.
8. Run your favourite PC 60fps material (emulators, videos, console ports).
9. Enjoy the best 60Hz "CRT" you can buy today, for cheaper than a Sony GDM-FW900 CRT

You're now using a virtual computer monitor inside VR. And the 60Hz low-persistence emulates CRT low persistence very well. You can configure the monitor to IMAX size, so you have to look around and up/down to see the screen. Kind of like a 100 foot CRT tube, if you wanted. You can also configure it to like a tiny CRT tube size at really close viewing distances.

As a bonus, after these changes, you can use your Quest 2 as a cordless VR headset for your PC VR games (Best experience via WiFi 6 router), but the purpose of these instructions is to get 60 Hz single strobe Virtual Desktop inside your VR headset. The Quest essentially becomes a multitool of multiple modes of operation after this change,

- Play apps installed into VR headset (it has a Qualcomm GPU)
- Play PC-based VR apps over Oculus Link (USB-C cable)
- Play PC-based VR apps over WiFi (WiFi 6 / 11ax preferred, WiFi 6 / 11ac minimum)
- Play PC games (non-VR) on a virtual screen inside VR
- Play PC games (non-VR) that uses 3D Vision games (stereoscopic 3D) on a virtual 3D television HOWTO.
- Watch both 2D and 3D movies on a virtual screen inside VR (ability to look around, even stare down to your virtual sofa or virtual theater armrest).
- CRT clarity 60Hz 0.3ms MPRT for anything that can run through PC (playing videos, playing games)

Be noted there is a smidge of latency (approximately 20ms lag from H.EVC streaming for direct cable connect), maybe about 25ms lag if you use WiFi 6. Compression artifacts generally won't be visible at maximum bitrates. Virtual Desktop will work both cabled and wireless for PC gaming. So you can use it like a cordless monitor for your PC anywhere else in the house, as long as you're sitting within WiFi range of your router. Essentialy you use the VR headset like a cordless HMD computer monitor for your regular gaming. You can make the monitor as big as an IMAX screen inside VR, requiring you to look up/down to see the screen, or make the monitor as small like a 14 inch CRT tube. The monitor stays fixed relative to physical space, so you can comfortably tilt/turn/rotate your head, and even look downwards to see your virtualized floor or virtualized theater seat or your virtualized sofa -- and virtually move the screen closer/further from you. Screendoor is surprisingly low on the newer Quest 2, given its extremely high-def screens per eye. The Oculus controllers can emulate as regular gamepads for PC games and emulators.

Currently, IMHO, this is one of the best "60Hz single strobe PC monitor" money can buy for true real world MPRT(100%) under 1ms at 60 Hz refresh rate. As long as you're OK with a very smidge of latency. Funny that the best 60 Hz single-strober is, currently a VR headset, being used to emulate a virtual computer monitor in 3D space...

(Tested by me on my Quest 2. Works great.)

This is great news. I'll be looking for that 1440p 240hz monitor. That will make my RTX 3090 FE *and* emulators very happy!

Eve single strobing minimum is 60Hz, or is unlocked ?
Provisionally, I'm hoping for fully unlocked. At least a 48Hz minimum. No guarantees. Convincing manufacturers to 60Hz is hard; going below to 50Hz is a bonus.

Also as a workaround, one can combine 100Hz hardware strobe + software BFI to get 50Hz single-strobe for emulation use (Latest version of RetroArch now supports 50Hz software BFI this way, via 100Hz, 150Hz, 200Hz, 250Hz, 300Hz and 350Hz; the multiples)

EDIT, for those monitor manufacturers who view this thread:

Why Should Gaming Monitor Manufacturers Add 60 Hz Single Strobe?
  1. There is 60 years of legacy 60fps 60Hz content. Videos, recordings, consoles, emulators, retro, etc.
SOLUTION: Need 60Hz single-strobe support to reduce motion blur of legacy 60fps content. Single-strobe isn't for eye-searcing bright Windows desktop. 60Hz single-strobe is for SIXTY YEARS of existing legacy content, video/dvd/videotape/sports/youtube/consoles/emulators/etc. Testing departments (QA) should correctly test 60Hz single strobe on correct 60fps content.
    -
  2. Beginning in 2021, Blur Busters Approved makes 60Hz single-strobe mandatory.
SOLUTION: Add menu ("Enable 60Hz Single Strobe [ON/OFF]") with it OFF by default to prevent user complaints. Advanced users should be able to intentionally enable this setting.
    -
  3. Strobing should be supported at all supported refresh rates.
SOLUTION: Add menu ("Unlock Unsuppored Strobe Refresh Rates [ON/OFF]") to prevent user complaints. As Intel lets people unlock CPU clocks, monitor manufacturers should enable advanced users to uncap strobe ranges.
    -
  4. Most newer TVs support 60Hz single strobe
SOLUTION: Just like for televisions, please let gaming monitors choose 60Hz s ingle-strobe. Not everyone is bothered by flicker. Sony 4K TVs, LG 4K TVs and Samsung 4K TVs now all support 60Hz single-strobe in Gaming Mode.
    -
  5. More users don't mind 60Hz single strobe than managers/engineers/lawyers at display manufacturers
SOLUTION: Just add warning message ("Warning 60Hz Will Flicker. Discontinue If You Have Discomfort") to cover your bases, even if manufacturer employees don't like 60 Hz single strobe.
    -
  6. More and more reviewers lowers scores for monitors that don't support 60Hz single-strobe.
SOLUTION: Just see the screenshot below from the RTINGS website! Please add 60 Hz single strobe support if you don't want lower review scores resulting in lower sales for your monitor!

Fortunately, I don't seem to be getting eyestrain with the Oculus Quest 2 single-strobe, but its brightness is subdued most of the time. \\\\

60 Years of 60 Hertz Legacy material

The problem is that there's literally more than 60 years of legacy 60fps material dating back to the first videotape recorders that preserved 60Hz motion resolution -- so we have a big use for CRT 60fps emulation just to watch legacy material in its original CRT zero-blur glory.

SIXTY YEARS of SIXTY FPS..... Chosen because our electricity is 60 Hz alternating-current, and it was easier for the first TVs to sync to that, and also because it's fairly close to our flicker fusion threshold in the era before flicker-free displays.

CRTs were dimmer and smaller than today's monitors so you need to mimic the situation a bit better.

Recommendations for Eliminating / Reducing 60Hz Eyestrain
  • Dim the screen brightness.
  • Adjust room lighting to be balanced relative to screen.
  • Use a dark theme for Windows. Don't use bright white windows
  • Use it only for video or games, not Windows desktop
  • Increase viewing distance (or shrink virtual screen size)
Many manufacturers test their strobing in laboratory-like environments which probably creates more eyestrain than consumer settings that exercise these mitigation measures. That said, users should have the choice, even if hidden behind a "Warning: 60Hz Strobe Will Flicker" disclaimer or such.

We will see how that looks. All I ask is something like this: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7520
Is it possible to get such level of motion clarity with modern IPS panels?
