Why would I want to flood my monitor with specific frequencies when I can just have the emulator output the precise framerate the console asks for and let G-Sync take care of the rest? Users should just be given free agency over whether they want their monitor to single strobe down to whatever lowest frequency is physically possible. I'm glad I have this old PG279Q where I can hack this VRR ULMB into CRU and enjoy single strobing down to 38hz. I just wish it had the response times to handle it better but oh well can't win em all.

strobing at 60.1hz is easy or any other weird refreshrate used by retroconsoles. retroarch need's a easy way to change videomodes without using VRR.
The MisTer fpga, ossc etc just change the pixel clock to alter the speed it works just fine on a single strobed monitor.

issue with native 60hz devices and single strobe is the extra lag it's not that bad but retrogamers are very sensitive to it. retroarch has many lag reducing settings that can compensate for this.
I'm pretty sure Retroarch doesn't have support for VRR and speeds up(or slows down) everything to 60hz(yuck!).

It does support vrr you have to enable it in frame throttle settings. it's called "sync to exact content framerate"

Is it worth waiting for a new 60hz strobing monitor in 2021? It seems that Eve has a spotty reputation and the only other monitor is the XL2411.

Now that CES is over, do we still not know more about that mystery big brand maker with the KSF phosphor monitor mentioned on the original post?

CES 2021 is not over yet. It's January 11-14th.

Has anyone considered looking at TV options other than the LG OLEDs?

The 2018 Vizio P series can do 50hz, 60hz, 100hz, and 120hz single-strobing. The MPRT value for 60hz is around 2ms and the MPRT value for 120hz is around 1ms. This is all at a fairly bright ~100 nits. Yes, the Vizio should have more crosstalk than the OLED, but considering the Vizio is much brighter and has much lower MPRT (especially at 120hz), it is my personal opinion that it has much better strobing overall.

Input lag (10-16ms depending on refresh rate) and crosstalk are still very good on the Vizio. I made an oversight in my pursuit camera shots linked above: the 120hz one was taken towards the top of the screen and not in the sweetspot, the actual 120hz crosstalk is closer to the 100hz result.

I theorize that higher end Vizio’s would do even better. Vizio BFI seems to be fully scalable in terms of strobe-width. The only limitation is brightness. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 2018 P-Quantum or 2019 P-Quantum X could do well below 1ms MPRT 60hz at over 100 nits. That’s entering true CRT-replacement territory.

Just watch out for the 2020 P-Quantum X. Not recommended as it’s very buggy and arguably totally broken!

The response times on the Vizio are good enough to make it a serious contender for the best 60hz-single-strobbing display currently on the market (if not other refresh rates too).

Vizio P65-F1 60hz Single-Strobing Crosstalk:
phpBB [video]

60Hz crosstalk is pretty minor, and it doesn't get any worse at the extreme bottom or top of the screen. I watched the above video before posting to make sure it was a fair representation of real life as well.

To better gauge the response times, lets look at strobing at 120hz,
Vizio P65-F1 120hz crosstalk at sweet spot (~75% up the screen):

Vizio P65-F1 120hz crosstalk worst case (very bottom of the screen):

Interestingly, worst-case is not as much worse than best-case as I was expecting.

It still looks the best at 100hz in the sweet spot (which is ~50% up the screen at 100hz). You can see that pursuit shot in my original strobing overview of the Vizio.

Thanks for fullscreen crosstalk pursuit video. Rolling scan minimize crosstalk and input lag, is a must be for strobing monitors. This TV do a very good job.

If this is the result with VA 4K 120Hz, with current IPS 4K 160Hz like last LG 27" panel in CES 2021 + Vizio last FALD 3,000 nits Rolling backlight, should be even better.

I want see one Vizio high end gaming monitor with the BlurBusters Approved sticker !
