F.E.A.R and 100/120hz?

Post by whitestar » 06 Jun 2014, 04:31

Anyone remember the old F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) game? One would think that would be an excellent candidate for Lightboost, right?

But no, it isn't. There is some strange issue in this game that I have not come across in any other game.

If I select any other hz than 60 (with vsync ON), then this happens: I can play at that hz, for example 85 without issues for a while. But as soon as I get to a cut scene video, the fps changes in the game. At first I thought it was reset to 60, but now I'm seeing it fluctuate between 60 and 70 and sometimes a little over 70. This was when I testet yesterday with 85hz. It seems to happen every time there is a cut scene video.

Has anyone encountered this? Would be nice to have a way around it.
Just come to think of it: Maybe I should try to play in Windowed mode?

Are you using vsync? I had similar problems, though not this exact one. My problem was stuttery mouse look.

I fixed it by disabling vsync in the game, and enabling it in the NVidia Control Panel profile for this game.

Hmmm, I think I did what you say when I ran a performance test. Disabled vsync in-game and enabled in drivers. I will try once more just to be sure.

Are you running the game at 120hz with vsync all the time without fps drop issues? Have you checked the fps with rivatuner, fraps or similar?

I never encountered this issue when using a CRT, because I ran it in 60hz all the time.

I don't have a 120Hz monitor yet. The problem I had was running it at 77Hz instead of 60, so I figured this might be related.

I noticed however that this game isn't exactly light on the system. It's an old game, but it stressed my 4.2Ghz i5 and GTX 780 a lot on max details. It might not be possible to run this at 120FPS. Though I was forcing a lot of AA in Inspector with special AA bits, and had soft shadows enabled at the same time. I don't have this game installed anymore so I can't run tests.

What FPS do you get if you disable vsync?

Also, try to use MSI Afterburner, and enable both the GPU load as well as the CPU load display in the OSD. If you hit 90% on the GPU or 100% on the CPU during those scenes, then it just means the game simply maxed out the system.

The game seems capped somehow. Even without vsync the fps was around 60-64 in the performance test. Very weird. I even tried to run it in single-GPU-mode (I have two GTX 670 in SLI), and I got exactly the same fps as in SLI.

I ran with Afterburner and HWInfo. The load was very light on my system. Besides, the game engine is from 2005. Even with everything on max it should still run like a hurricane on my setup, I gather. :)

Are you using a Logitech keyboard or mouse? You might be suffering from this:

Due to the age of this game, this issue was never fixed.

Nice find!
I don't get the major fps drops that they talk about there, but I will certainly have a look at this solution, since I'm using a Logitech G700 wireless mouse.

Thanks for helping out. :)

That Logitech bug turned out to be the culprit. I tested with my old Razer Lachesis mouse and the issue never occured. Thanks again RealNC for pointing me to it.

Btw, I use a Logitech G400 mouse. As I mentioned earlier, all I had to do to fix the stutter, was to disable V-Sync in the game's settings and enable it in the NVidia panel instead.

But it seems this doesn't work for everyone.

No, it didn't work for me unfortunately. And disabling the HIDs with this script didn't work either: http://igordcard.blogspot.no/2013/01/su ... itech.html

Haven't tested disabling them manually yet. That could work. But what definitely worked was changing mouse.
