G-Sync with dual monitor (G-Sync compatible & non-Gsync)

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

G-Sync with dual monitor (G-Sync compatible & non-Gsync)

Post by WillZM » 09 Jan 2025, 21:59

Hi all, I have FreeSync Premium monitor, MSI MPG 27URF-QD (4K 160HZ). Unfortunately it is not listed in G-Sync compatible monitor list in NVIDIA website. However, G-Sync works fine when use with this monitor alone. But once I connected second monitor (random Acer 1080p 60HZ), G-Sync only works in exclusive full-screen mode. It doesn't work with full-screen borderless game. It does work with Windowed mode though, with Fullscreen+Windowed enabled in NVCP.

After long browsing, some said this is known issue with no working solution. Some said their multiple monitor setup are fine. Is this because the second monitor has no VRR or due to the MSI monitor itself is not G-Sync compatible?

Current NVCP setting:
Monitor Tech : Freesync Premium
Low Latency Mode: Ultra
VSync: On

Things I have tried:
-Play around with Windows VRR/HAGS/Optimization for Windowed settings
-Play around with NVCP; Fullscreen/Fullscreen+windowed.
-Update latest Windows 11; 24H2. But rollback to 23H2 currently

My spec:
i5-13600k
RTX4090

Are you forcing vsync in the nvidia control panel? This can cause issues with multiple displays. If yes, set it to "use the 3D application setting."

Thanks for the input, but sadly still doesn't solve my issue. I still can't get GSync to turn on for fullscreen borderless unless i disconnected my second non-Gsync & non-freeSync monitor

Can you check if MPOs are enabled on the primary monitor? The easiest way I know of on how to verify that is to install SpecialK and run SKIF and go to the "Settings" tab, where you can see this and it should say 4 planes are available:

Thanks for the quick feedback!
I've installed the SpecialK and here's the info. Seems like it is disabled for my main monitor, but enabled for my Acer/secondary monitor right?

Yeah. That's weird. Are you sure you've set the MPG to be the primary display? Also, are you using HDR mode in Windows? Or 10/12-bit color? Or DSR/DLDSR? All these can disable MPO support which can cause g-sync to stop working in borderless.

Keep in mind that MPOs are only enabled on one display. But it should be the primary, not the secondary. But for you it seems that for some weird reason, it's the other way around.

Yes, it's set as primary display, as shown in image below.
My HDR is turned off.
I'm not using DSR/DLDSR, my NVCP don't even have those option somehow. I'll try search around why is this, but this is separate matter though.

For all those settings, does it also cause GSync to stop working in borderless in single monitor mode? Because I able to get it work in single monitor mode.

Normally you don't need MPO support to make borderless work with g-sync. But that's for single display mode. With multiple displays, it might be different.

However, have you tried to swap the ports of the two displays? Maybe that will help.

I can't, my main monitor is using DP, the secondary is using HDMI (no DP port). I don't think it's the port though, I have tried my old monitor but with true GSync support, (Acer XB271HU i think). That monitor is using DP as well, and when paired with the secondary non-Gsync monitor, I checked that the MPO is enabled for the XB271HU and disabled for the secondary.
Perhaps the MSI monitor itself is not supported? It is FreeSync Premium, not GSync. Is it possible that this is the root cause?
