GSync, 144 FPS, and Source Engine games

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

GSync, 144 FPS, and Source Engine games

Post by Spudzone » 01 Sep 2014, 11:04

Hello fellow GSync users!

I finally got my PG278Q and it's fantastic!

I'm currently having a bit of trouble enabling 144 FPS on my source engine based games. Currently I play Natural Selection 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike:GO, and Left 4 Dead 2. GSync enables automatically when I launch each game, but it is capped @ 60 fps. I have tried enabling the max_fps command to 144 and on most games it tells me I need to disconnect or switch teams, which I did, and using the netgraph or cl_showfps command it shows that it's still locked on 60. Any suggestions?

Shouldn't you be playing Source engine games with ULMB instead of G-SYNC?

nvidia control panel > manage 3d settings > program settings > add .exe > preferred refresh rate = highest available

Also, sounds like you might be running your desktop in 60hz mode, but I'm not sure? Change it to 120hz or 144hz. Personally I use 120hz strobed for the desktop.

Some games won't run at a higher refresh than your desktop is, when desktop and game are running at that same resolution. Some games and apps will run higher, when you force higher refresh from the driver level. Some games and apps will only run higher when you actually run the desktop at the highest refresh. For example, some games I can't run in 144hz mode if I'm running the desktop in only 120hz, even if forcing highest refresh from driver level (would have to change that desktop up to 144hz)

Go to library/properties/set launch options and type:
-freq 144

Don't know about other Source games, but with CS:GO, as mentioned by kamill, you can add "-freq 144" in the launch options, and then make sure that G-Sync doesn't cap-out by using "fps_max 136" and "fps_max_menu 136". This is needed because when G-Sync caps out, it switches to V-Sync, which means the usual input lag.

You can add the fps_max commands to your autoexec.cfg.

Eh, what a pain...

I dont get that. I rather play all games with ulmb OR all games with gsync. U know, to have a consistent xp.
Since im not rich and not ok with paying 2 year old games always, id stick with gsync. Also, id stick with gsync, cuz stutters, tearing and lag take away far more from enjoyment than a little motion blur (were talking 144hz monitors here after all).

Thanks for the reply folks! The adding "-freq 144" on the launch options did it for all 4 games. Natural Selection 2, I guess because of the graphics, runs a bit under 60 a lot of times, but CS:GO, TF2, and L4D2 are running fantastic and buttery smoothe! :) Thanks again!

Natural Selection 2 is awesome, but it's not a Source Engine game. :)

Which is why my post seems to be the better, universal and comprehensive way of doing things. ie, not every engine has a refresh forcer, so why wouldn't you run the desktop at the highest refresh and force from the driver level, rather than messing around with launch options?
