PoWn3d_0704's Gsync Thread

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

I actually have sheet metal tools. If I get the ambition, I will dimple the bracket myself. Just a little bit annoying for a $200 dollar kit.

More issues...

The left side of my screen is flickering. Like a florescent bulb that is just starting to go out. It flickers briefly every once in a while. Don't notice it under high movement games like FPS games or LoL, but in Rust, where I sit a lot while typing out console commands I do notice it.

Well, that's somewhat concerning, just like the tearline-at-top phenomenon.

I just got my gsync running and noticed some flickering in the upper left corner and left side of the screen. It only happened the first time I turned it on. After a restart and disconnecting my other screen there has been no flickering.

Mine has lessened throughout the day. Intently looked for it for about 5 mins during a game and I didnt see it.

MAN! It's been awhile since I've updated this thread.

Let me tell you what, this monitor is the best thing I've used.

With Driver updates, the black screen I used to get when first launching a game has stopped. I do still see some flashing in the backlight on the left side of my screen, usually during low FPS capped loading screens. Never noticed it in game.

All I can say about GSync is that I have finally gotten the settings more or less worked out.

I find myself very rarely using ULMB and sticking mostly to GSync. I lock any game I can to 140-143 FPS and leave GSync on. The only thing that kills me is how many games have engine stutter.

Nearly every game I play (besides COD:4 and Counter Strike) has some sort of engine stutter that first seems like its Gsync messing up. Just poorly made console ports.

I've actually found the opposite: I'm surprised at how many games run smooth with G-sync when it felt like they had engine stutter problems before. The one thing that is still a major issue is dynamic loading / texture streaming. When these techniques first started showing up in games a few years ago, they worked smoothly albeit with some graphical artifacts. Over the years, they seem to be causing more and more performance problems, frame drops, and even short freezes, even on the same engine it worked perfectly on a couple years ago.

One strange example I ran into recently is the new Age of Mythology: Extended Edition. The game's fullscreen mode is actually borderless windowed mode and playing the game like that you'd think the game engine has some MAJOR performance problems with stuttering so bad objects jump an inch or more on the screen during simple camera panning. If I use ALT+ENTER to force fullscreen mode and activate G-sync, it runs silky smooth.

I think a lot of people mix up microstutter with stutter. The people that seem dissapointed in gsync are often actually people that never saw microstutter. They thought that normal loading stutter, WAS the stutter that everyone was talking about when they spoke of microstutter. When in fact, it's not. Microstutter is the feeling that a game is running at a lower framerate although it's realistically running at a high framerate. Which is why sli and crossfire often have the worst cases. Whereas stutter is what happens in watch dogs when you set everything too high. For example.

I remember running assassins creed 3, and noticing that the game felt smoother at
30fps on one gtx 670 than it did with two running 58fps. The 58fps was more responsive and smoother at times, however the feeling of consistency that came with the 30fps single gpu, made the framerate feel more natural.

I hear what you mean, and even ditched my second 670 for a steambox. I now just use one GTX 670 compared to my roomates SLI 670's (On a 60hz screen), and I cant bear to watch him play counterstrike or really anything.

My favorite occuance lately was Wolfenstien. We ran identical settings at identical FPS (Wolfenstein wasnt using SLI GPUs when it first came out), and my screen looked SO much better, even though Wolfenstien is LOCKED to 60hz.

So, is SLI still a no go with G-Sync on the VG248QE? I was planning on getting a second 780 Ti in November for Project Cars.
