Either your description of "tearing" is incorrect, or something else is going on, because neither Fast Sync or v-sync can tear at any framerate.

I meant 240fps with fast sync at 120hz. Or 288fps at 144hz. Should be ~4ms faster than 119 fps. As for smoothness, it's more likely you'll miss a frame deadline, but the penalty for missing a frame deadline is half as severe.

First of all, Ty for all the testing work you have done and the maintenance to the thread.

This subject matter was one that I had been testing myself but only using my eyes as a measuring tool, so not to hi-tech. However, my biggest question through all my testing was "how does G-sync/V-sync/Fast-Sync" work. I knew the purpose was to reduce/eliminate tearing but my knowledge of it all was pretty limited to random Youtbue vids and small articles + forum post. Your thread was a pleasure to read!

I'm now using your Optimal G-Sync Setting: 165hz: 162 fps limit (in-game) + V-Sync On. It works flawlessly with Overwatch.
My FPS maintains at 161-162 like 99% of the time. The game runs like butter! No joke. TY.

I do have a question since Overwatch isn't the only game I'm playing right now. So my question is, what if I'm playing a game that my FPS moves between 80-145 FPS (while using your Optimal G-Sync Settings), do I keep using the same optimal settings or do I suppose to adjust the settings when my in-game FPS does not reach the monitors ceiling 165 Hz? The game by the way is The Witcher 3. My results so far are good with little to no stuttering/tearing as well as little to no lag, however, these results are only using my eyes so not the best measuring tool. And, the reason I ask this is because I'm not a PC guru so I'm just double checking that I'm running the most optimal settings I can with my rig. Thanks in advance!!!!

This is my rig:

Monitor: Dell - 24" LED QHD GSync Monitor / 2560 x 1440 / 165Hz (overclocked from the monitor itself from 1440Hz native)

MOTHERBOARD: MSI Z270-A PRO

CPU: Intel i7-7700K

GPU: MSI GTX-1080

RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DD4 16GB @3200MHz

MEMORY: SanDisk X400 512GB (SSD) & Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB (HD)

Btw, I do have V-Sync Off in-game, but, On from Nvidia 3-D settings (like your optimal settings recommend). The Witcher 3 in-game settings are all most on Ultimate with a few items like Shadow, Water, Terrain, and Grass on High. Also I have all HairWorks stuff off because it costs a lot of FPS to run it.

Thanks again!!

@kingbenjie, I am happy to hear my information has been useful to you. I will have much more of it to share when I release the third and final part of my G-SYNC 101 article, hopefully very soon.

The settings you listed are correct for your refresh rate. And no, there is no need to change them in games where the framerate can't reach or exceed the refresh rate.

The FPS limit is only needed when the framerate exceeds the refresh rate, because G-SYNC can no longer adjust the refresh rate to the framerate, and thus reverts to V-SYNC behavior above its range; as long as G-SYNC can adjust the refresh rate to the framerate, you're getting tear-free frames to the display as fast as possible.

In fact, in games where the framerate doesn't come near to reaching your max refresh rate, an FPS limit isn't required at all. But having one in that instance can't really hurt either.

It looks like the textbook definition of tearing, but it doesn't show up in captures via Fraps.

Here's my attempt at capturing it with my phone's camera:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnCyGVa7J7k Fast-Sync 120fps/120Hz

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kou9ettaoSs Fast-Sync 300fps/120Hz

So you can see there's tearing at 120fps compared to 300. It's hard to see here, but there's a little bit of tearing at 300 too, at least more than the following:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwHw12xmmTg V-Sync 119fps/120Hz (I get no tearing at all in this)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nq389MgvtGY (No sync, uncapped fps, there's little tearing, but this shows how hard it is to see at 300fps via phone camera).

Well, fast sync isn't working then. I don't know why. Maybe misconfiguration somewhere. Try to restore the nvidia panel profiles to default first. Might fix it.

What's you GPU btw? AFAIK, fast sync doesn't work on older GPUs (it only works on 900 cards and later.)

How do I do that? It's a GTX 1080.

Fast-Sync, or whatever the computer is doing when I select 'Fast', looks a lot less tear-y than no sync at all, just not as clean as V-Sync

@drmcninja

Can you post a screen capture of your Nvidia Control Panel Settings, and the Overwatch video settings screen?

It was set to 'Fast' for Fast Sync, and 'On' for when using V Sync. I don't use in-game V Sync option when utilizing V Sync. FPS is at 119 since that's my V Sync setting which I was using last.

1. Try Render Scale at 100%, may not be related at all, but strange things can sometimes happen with non-native resolutions, even internally.
2. Do you have one or more overlays active, like ShadowPlay?
3. What background programs do you have running on a regular basis?
4. Do you have one or all of the "Game bar," "Game DVR," and/or "Game Mode" settings active in Windows Settings > Gaming?
5. Do you have "Disable fullscreen optimizations" checked or unchecked in the Compatibility tab of the Overwatch game .exe?
6. Are your graphics drivers up-to-date, and do you ever clean install them with DDU?
