PUBG stutter issue, smoother without Gsync ?

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

PUBG stutter issue, smoother without Gsync ?

Post by NastyRabbit » 12 Apr 2018, 12:45

Hi everybody I got a weird issue that suddently appears around 10 days ago. I experience micro stutters/mouse lag even with high fps (120+) while playing pubg.
At first I thought it was network related cause my FPS were fine but I can recreate those stutters on demand on some specific area of the game.
I checked GPU/Ram/disk/cpu usage it's all fine

Tried a lot of fixes, ended up wiping all drivers, disabled second monitor etc... the stutter is still here. Another weird thing is when I disable Gsync the stutter are still here but it feels a litle bit better.

Set up :

W10 pro 64
S2716DG 144Hz Gsync (display port) + LG 60Hz (DVI)
I7 6700K 4.5GHz
Z170 gaming pro carbon
MSI 980Ti gaming X(tried whith both OC and stock clocks)
960evo M2 250Go> OS disk
850 evo 500Go> games disk
16Go 2666Hz Ram with 16go pagefile on the OS disk
Mionix castor mouse 1KHz polling rate

With thanks in advance

Strange -- an issue that suddenly appeared only only 10 days ago?

Did you receive a Windows update? Graphics driver update? Did PUBG do a software update?

(I have seen a Windows update do something similar over a year ago, but that wouldn't be the same update)

Well you're not gonna like it but I did update windows, graphic drivers and pubg recently, but as I do not play everyday I can't say wich update could be to blame.

About pubg, usually people like to complain a lot after every big update but I didn't read anything similar to my problem on any forums.

I also play csgo, but without G sync and it feel smooth, I should be able to test G sync on other games this weekend.

-- Try a reboot with your startup stuff temporarily disabled (msconfig.exe)
-- Try Game Mode for that game (Windows+G, Settings, General, Game Mode)
-- PUBG seems to hit the disk more than CS:GO. Run Samsung Magician and do an SSD diagnostic (any degradation?)
-- Configure your PUBG framerate cap (try a few fps below refresh rate for GSYNC, try capped & uncapped for VSYNC OFF)

May be longshots, maybe you tried one or two already, but easy tests to do.

Just tried with every non windows services desactivited, nothing changed, same with game mode.

Both my SSD are fine on samsung magician.

I already play with framerate capped to 141fps, tried to uncap this, still no change.

I got some new informations for you :

-this is nothing mouse related I did experience it even when using only keyboard to moove.
-it looks like it happens whith very short fps drop pikes (120 to 105 for example)

As it feels about the same with ou without Gsync enable is this possible that my Gsync is enabled but not working ? Any way to test it ?

Could it just be it's a poorly made game with a bad update? Someone else was saying the same thing yesterday in these forums.

G-Sync is probably working but it can't do anything if there are massive dips in framerate. but yea idk i don't really have pubg but i know a lot of people are complaining.

You should be able to notice that it's not frame tearing when you have G-Sync on.

Monitor menus should confirm GSYNC mode is enabled.
Usually PUBG is very VRR friendly.

GSYNC can destutter most of the time, but whenever there is a VRR-unfriendly stutter (a major disk access, a computer micro-freeze, a gametime miscalculation, another kind of stall), GSYNC and FreeSync sometimes can't fix a specific stutter. A PUBG update may have introduced a stutter mechnism that no VRR can fix. A game update can sometimes do it.

One last try is an older NVIDIA driver, roll back to what you had before, but I think you tried that already?

I don't experience massive dips, my fps stay in the 100/135 range wich seems reasonable.

Before this problem fps were the same but it felt way smoother, I only noticed drops in rare occasions when fps went under 80, but still it stayed smooth. Now every 15 fps drop results in some micro but well noticeable stutter.

I've never encountered tearing, with or without Gsync, probably cause 99% of the time my fps are under my 144Hz refresh rate

Yeah monitor menu shows Gsync enabled, but maybe it's enabled and faulty ?

I never tried old drivers, will do tomorow, for now I go to bed.

Thanks for all your quick answers

>I don't experience massive dips, my fps stay in the 100/135 range wich seems reasonable.

That doesn't mean it's not happening. a single frame drop will not lower your average by much since FPS value is a average over a second.

>I've never encountered tearing, with or without Gsync, probably cause 99% of the time my fps are under my 144Hz refresh rate

That doesn't really make sense, you get frametearing no matter what unless you sync your game with your refreshrate. Having your fps above or below your maximum doesn't stop tearing.

If it doesn't affect other games it's probably just PUBG being dumb.
