V-sync frame pacing Issue in Overwatch.

Post by MTSJ » 11 Jul 2018, 08:52

There's a weird issue with V-sync in Overwatch where the frame pacing becomes really bad when your FPS gets close to the refresh rate of your monitor (and it becomes extremely bad if your FPS is equal to refresh rate) and the only way to fix it is to not use a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Refresh rate, frame rate, and resolution are irrelevant (unless the resolution forces a non-16:9 aspect ratio), also changing between in-game and driver V-sync doesn't fix it. Having G-sync enabled greatly amplifies the bad frame pacing but it happens without it too.

It doesn't seem like a huge issue but I think it might be always lurking in the background even if your FPS is capped way below your refresh rate. I think it even messes with the proper G-sync settings (FPS capped -3 or -2 below refresh rate).

It makes me wonder if it has had an effect on the V-Sync (+G-sync) measurements on this article https://www.blurbusters.com/gsync/gsync ... ettings/4/

It's not a new issue either so it might be something worth looking into.

TL DR: 16:9 Aspect ratio in OW causes bad frame pacing and even affects G-sync and I have no idea why (I guess its a bug?).
