ViewSonic XG270 - Vertical Refresh inconsistent while G-Sync enabled

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

ViewSonic XG270 - Vertical Refresh inconsistent while G-Sync enabled

Post by Zealot » 01 Feb 2020, 12:01

I have noticed that my vertical refresh rate varies quite badly in some games with G-Sync enabled.
Instead of staying close to my FPS vertical refresh goes way above and below constantly.
During my daily usage I noticed this happening in Destiny 2 but other games like Overwatch did not show this issue, there vertical refresh stayed close to framerate. G-Sync is fullscreen only and my fps is limited to 235 in control panel and 144 in Destiny 2 itself.

Does this behaviour affect the monitors longevity? Does it cause other issues? If so, is there a way I can fix this?

Here is a link to a short clip demonstrating the issue: https://gfycat.com/reflectingfortunateandeancondor

You're using a G-SYNC Compatible FreeSync monitor, which means the monitor's built-in readouts were probably originally intended for native FreeSync functionality, and any driver implementation differences between AMD VRR and Nvidia VRR are likely causing that readout to misreport in G-SYNC mode, especially since your system's FPS meter in the bottom left of the display appears to be steady.

Said readout can still be used to determine if G-SYNC is engaged in the given game (fluctuating = VRR, static = fixed refresh rate), but you should probably rely on system-side FPS readouts to determine actual current framerate/VRR refresh rate instead.

That is what gsync is. VRR (variable refresh rate). Your vertical refresh rate can go absolutely ballistic all over the place it will not damage anything. It's what the monitor is designed for.

Thanks for the clarification. Glad to know I have nothing to worry about.
