Vsync + Frame cap similar to G-sync?

Hi folks,

Pardon my ignorance on this subject but I recently upgraded from a 7 year old 120hz monitor to the Samsung Odyssey G7. My eyes were bleeding at the improvement in all aspects but when I turned on G-Sync I had some crazy flickering issues and this seems to be a common problem with G7 owners and there doesn't seem to be a viable firmware/software fix for it.

I *really* don't want to return this monitor because G-sync doesn't work as I love every other part of it (including the monster curve). I average around 150-200+ fps in some of the games I play. I was told that if I turn adaptive sync off and let it run at 240 hz and use Rivatuner or the in-game cap to cap my FPS at 239 FPS, I won't need G-sync.

I wanted to consult the experts here as the knowledge here seems light years ahead of Reddit on these issues — is this true? What am I missing out by doing this? And if I had to return it, is there any equivalent monitor you could recommend that ticks all the boxes and has an actual G-sync module instead of just being G-sync compatible?

Maybe it' s my old eyes but I can't seem to tell the difference with G-sync on (aside from the flickering) in the Nvidia pendulum demo if I follow the above setup. I can tell the difference in smoothness in my G7 240hz compared to my friend's 144hz monitor. I can't help shake the feeling that paying 700-800 dollars for a monitor, you should be able to use one of it's prime features i.e. G-sync.

To sum-up, with variable 150-200+ FPS within the refresh rate and standalone double buffer V-SYNC enabled, frames will repeat periodically, causing a recurring stutter and a 1 to 2 frame increase in input lag over G-SYNC or no sync at any given time.

That said, any scenario is relatively low lag at 240Hz, and the appearance of tearing is also reduced that that refresh rate, so if G-SYNC isn't working properly on your particular monitor model, your system can't maintain a constant 240 FPS in the games you play, and you don't want to deal with the downsides of standalone V-SYNC, you'll have to try no sync (G-SYNC off, V-SYNC off), and see if you can tolerate the tearing artifacts.

Thank you so much for the brilliant article and also summarizing the findings in your response. So much to learn! This helped me a ton. Now to see if I can endure the tearing... I love the G7 monitor except for this Gsync flickering business :(

Glad to hear it was of some use to you ;)

And yes, while some mild flicker is expected, even on native G-SYNC displays (specifically at very low refresh rates, such as during some loading screens), it seems flicker, even in the higher refresh rate range on G-SYNC Compatible FreeSync displays is a common issue, particularly on VA-type panels for whatever reason.

Really what's the difference in inputlag between 240hz without g-sync and 240hz with g-sync?

I wanted to know the difference between G-sync + V-sync (nvidia)ON limiter game 237fps
VS G-sync and V-sync OFF limiter game 240fps

Last curiosity. If my pc is not constant in 240fps should I use g-sync + v-sync on 237fps or all off? In that case of non-constant fps with g-sync + v-sync ON increase inputlag compared to OFF?

G-SYNC on + V-SYNC on has virtually no input lag difference vs. G-SYNC on + V-SYNC off with framerates within the refresh rate:

As for setting an FPS limit if you're system can't reach or maintain framerates above your refresh rate, it still can in menus and in less demanding scenes, so no harm in leaving the 237 FPS cap in place as to ensure G-SYNC remains active at all times.
