how many versions of gsync are there?

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

Is the gsync module in the new Alienware 360hz better then say the driver based gsync in the asus 280hz?
Hardware G-SYNC is typically going to be "better" than software G-SYNC, particularly where variable overdrive is concerned, which 99% of LCD G-SYNC Compatible FreeSync monitors will not be capable of, but other than that, the appreciable differences between the two should be minor, especially if the G-SYNC Compatible FreeSync monitor in question supports LFC (and at those max refresh rates, it will, so..).
