I'm looking to upgrade my 60hz monitor. Right now I'm using a 980ti, and from what I read the cheaper "G-SYNC compatible" monitors are only supported for the 10-series and better. That means my card can't take advantage of freesync/the tech on these cheaper 144hz monitors, and in order to get smooth gameplay at 144hz I would have to save up a bit more and get an actual G-SYNC monitor. Is my thinking correct here?
Thanks in advance.
Quick question on G-SYNC with older cards

Re: Quick question on G-SYNC with older cards
Yes, you have two options:
1. Upgrade your GPU to a 10-series or higher and purchase a G-SYNC Compatible monitor.
2. Keep your current GPU, and purchase a G-SYNC monitor containing a module.
I'd note a couple things here, however. Firstly, if you're to buy a G-SYNC Compatible monitor, ensure it is on this list:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/pr ... ors/specs/
And secondly, if you don't upgrade your 980 Ti, and you only upgrade your monitor, you're going to have a hard time running the latest games even near their highest settings at 144Hz, especially if you opt for a higher than 1080p resolution.
That said, if you predominately play, say, comp games at minimum settings, then your 980 Ti with a 1080p G-SYNC Compatible monitor should be sufficient.
