Apex Legends G-Sync setting and latency

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

Apex Legends G-Sync setting and latency

Post by Flickspeed » 10 Jun 2021, 00:46

Ok so here is the deal,

In 2020 I played Apex Legends on a 1070-Ti and an Asus g-sync monitor at 144 Hz.

I had to cap the framerate to 124 for G-sync to work properly otherwise some frames where going above 144 (No not on the FPS counter but on the monitor menu live Hz counter in g-sync mode, as you figure jumpy Hz is the same as jumpy fps in this case). In case of the monitor set to 165Hz the FPS/Hz variation also increased with that so 124 fps cap was the butter back than for both 144hz and 165hz g-sync modes in Apex.

Now in 2021

I haven't played the game for a while I am playing again with a 3070 and the same monitor. But now even at 124 fps cap in g-sync mode the frames and Hz are jumping all over the place hitting the 144 and 165 causing tearing and stutter.

So what's happening? Why are frames all over the place? The only solution I found so far is to use Vsync ON with G-sync and that eliminated the stutters. But it also feels like now I am getting more input lag compared to 2020. So instead of getting less input lag with time I am getting more :) WTF right? What should I do to keep a good response time and smooth motion?

Another question, does turning on the Adaptive Sync feature in the monitor settings menu automatically add more input lag into the pipe? Has anyone actually tested the exact amount of g-sync input lag in games like CS GO or APEX compared to no g-sync? If you have please post your findings.

I used to be a CRT gamer playing 94hz with 100 fps never felt any lag or bad tearing, but nowadays I feel like I have downs. pls help :D

If the game is capping to a number and the onscreen number built into the monitor is higher.. That is wrong just don't use it. Some of them are dodgy. I had a gsync module monitor and it read correct all the time, but now I have a gsync compatible one and sometimes it just shoots up, the game reading is right, not the monitor.

You are saying you are capping but its going over now. That means your cap just isn't working.

Try the NCP limiter or RTSS.

No way, if that is the case why the tearing and stuttering then? All FPS counters show it locked to 124 so cap is working but Hz are hitting the refresh limits all the time. Rivatuner and Driver cap act the same now too, the cap is way too loose.

Do you have the monitor set to its max hz in NCP and in game?

What you are saying doesn't make sense, you can't be hitting a cap in game but then your monitor separately isn't.

If it is working by turning on Vsync with Gsync that means it is your cap that isn't working.

Vsync ON + Gsync on a game with Nvidia Reflex will auto cap below your monitors max refresh.

By saying "its hitting its refresh limits all the time" do you mean it just constantly shows your max refresh?

If so that means Gsync isn't on.

No it means it is hitting the max refresh in every 4 to 5 reports. It is bouncing from 100hz to 144hz when previously it was bouncing around 110 to 140 max

Yes. The only solution.

If you want fluidity you have to sacrifice input lag.

But you are talking about the built in reading on the screen right?

If your ingame fps is staying under your max refresh, like i said above the built in reading is just off, don't use it.

I have never used a 144hz screen but I have a 240hz, so when on a 144hz you can probably still see tearing near the bottom with Gsync on + Vsync off on 240hz I can't see anything.

Playing on a 240hz with no syncs on I can't see tearing either.

I can't see tearing either, but it is less smoother

So the solution seems to get a 240hz or 360hz just as I thought.
