Couple of G-sync (and V-Sync) questions

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

Couple of G-sync (and V-Sync) questions

Post by veyvey » 24 Sep 2021, 05:07

My main question is if I am getting over 100 FPS at least on the games I am playing, would a 60Hz g-sync monitor be utilising the g-sync all the time and technically capping my FPS to 60? Would a 144hz g-sync monitor provide more use of the g-sync by matching my Hz with the FPS I am achieving? I haven't heard any bad things about g-sync I'm just still not too sure what FPS it is utilised best for. Thank for any help.

No, G-SYNC only functions when the framerate is within the currently set max refresh rate of the monitor, so on a 60Hz FreeSync/G-SYNC monitor with LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) support, for instance, you have an effective 1 through 60 FPS G-SYNC range.

That said, with G-SYNC, it's recommended to limit your FPS at least 3 below your current max refresh rate (aka 57 FPS at 60Hz, 141 FPS at 144Hz, and so on) to account for frametime variances, in the cases framerate can otherwise exceed the refresh rate without the limit (as to keep it within the refresh rate, which, again, is the effective G-SYNC "range").

Yes, the higher the max refresh rate, the larger the G-SYNC range. 100 FPS would be 44 frames within the G-SYNC range on a 144Hz monitor.

See G-SYNC 101: "Range" for more details...
