Hello everyone,

i'd like some feedback on setting up a system for visual servoing in robotics. What this actually means, in simple terms, is that we have a robotic manipulator trying to track a "point" using visual input from a camera. I want to play a *video* of 144+ fps (ideally 160 fps) on a panel, and actually display each frame. Can you suggest a monitor that can get this Hz, along with a suitable graphics card? I am strongly oriented towards amd cards since I am on Ubuntu RT. Has anyone had experience with this?

no consumers available monitors ATM do 160hz unless you get yourself a old CRT that can push 160hz. Blurbusters has a small list of monitors that can push 144hz but it's hard to sudgest one without a price point. http://www.blurbusters.com/faq/120hz-monitors/

With the graphics card, it really depends on the format and bitrate of the footage to tell how demanding of a card you need but I'm pretty sure if you just get a 270 you should be fine.

Thanks for the answer lexlazootin. About the specifics, the total price for the display+card is 1K-1.5K. CRT is not an option. The video is 800x600@144fsp, 32bbp encoded in H264-MPEG4 AVC. Decoded format is planar 4:2:0 YUV.It is intended to be played back in full screen. We might make a new one in 1280x720, but depends whether it can be displayed correctly at 144Hz.
My main concern is if we can play a video in this frame rate, I suppose it also depends on the video player as well (we are on VLC currently).

You can get a BenQ XL2420Z for about $320 and a AMD R9 270x for about $200. A 270x is Way enough to push that video.

You might need to use a different program to play back the video. in windows VLC has a hissyfit every time I play back 120hz video, but it just might be windows or a bit of tweaking I need to do but I just end up using something else.
