LG 24GL600F overclock success but message 'out of range'

Talk about overclocking displays at a higher refresh rate. This includes homebrew, 165Hz, QNIX, Catleap, Overlord Tempest, SEIKI displays, certain HDTVs, and other overclockable displays.

LG 24GL600F overclock success but message 'out of range'

Post by overclocker12343 » 18 Aug 2019, 12:18

I overclocked the LG UltraGear 24GL600F 144hz gaming monitor to 244HZ with CRU and everything seems to be working fine, gaming, etc, but the annoying thing is that I get a "out of range" message taking up the middle of the screen. Can anyone help pls?

I don't know if this works, but it's worth a try. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5544

Out of Range popups are really annoying, especially if it's a working overclocks.

Various hacks were found with BenQ ZOWIE monitors to dismiss this pop, but "Out of Range" dismiss hacks are very vendor-dependant.

Attempting to dismiss this can be very tricky, but could be a variety of repeat-mode-changes, to DDC commands, to external button pads, and other user-accessible tricks to dismiss the OOR popups that are built into monitors. Sometimes overclock headroom is small (+5 Hz) while it can be huge in others (+100 Hz) -- it depends on the weak links.

Funny thing is, I have this same monitor and I cannot go above around 170 before it just goes black. Is it possible that I have a later revision?

Also, at around 165hz overclock I start to see microstuttering and the screen sometimes goes black momentarily if brightness is very high or I am displaying a fast graphic. After I realised that, I switched right back to 144hz and honestly I did not see the difference.

Can I ask how much of a difference is there between motion blur reduced 144hz vs 'stock' 240hz?

Thanks in advance.

Assuming GtG=0 (instant GtG) -- then 240Hz will be (240/144) clearer = 1.66x clearer motion.

Mathematically, Blur Busters Law dictates 1ms of persistence translates to 1 pixel of motion blur per 1000 pixels/second.

Persistence is equal to refreshtime for sample-and-hold displays:

But GtG is not zero, so it will diminish the difference between 240Hz and 144Hz. If you get a 240Hz 1440p monitor, it is recommended to make sure you have 0.5ms GtG or 1ms GtG. GtG will bottleneck your motion blur improvements on a smaple-and-hold display.

So in the refresh rate race, it is important that GtG remains much faster than refreshtime. 1ms GtG was unimportant at 60Hz, but 1ms GtG is a gigantic brick wall at 480 Hertz refresh (2ms refreshtimes).

This is normal.

(A) You need to double Hz to halve motion blur. (without help by blur reduction modes)
144Hz vs 165Hz is almost worthless. You want 144Hz vs 240Hz, or even 144Hz vs 360Hz.

(B) In certain cases overclocking sometimes worsen GtG due to LCD refreshing behavior
See "LCD Pixels as GtG soccer balls" metaphor.

60Hz vs 144Hz = 2.4x improvement
144Hz vs 240Hz = 1.5x improvement
144Hz vs 360Hz = 2.5x improvement
144Hz vs 165Hz = only 1.1x improvement (this tiny overclock margin is sometimes cancelled out by GtG worsening)

Honestly, I am not surprised you did not see a difference. It's too subtle a refresh rate difference.
It's easier for me to tell apart 240Hz and 480Hz (my experimental unit) than 144Hz vs 165Hz.
