Dell P2418D, OC and Questions.

Talk about overclocking displays at a higher refresh rate. This includes homebrew, 165Hz, QNIX, Catleap, Overlord Tempest, SEIKI displays, certain HDTVs, and other overclockable displays.

Dell P2418D, OC and Questions.

Post by HookandRoll » 24 Feb 2020, 11:50

The monitor is a Dell P2418D, IPS panel, 1440p max res and 60hz from factory

Tried overclocking it, used the test provided in https://testufo.com/frameskipping#horiz=70&vert=20
75hz achieved with frameskip each 4 squares
70hz achieved with frameskip each 6 squares
65hz no frameskip.

Questions, how noticeable is the frameskip in-game?

Is 70hz viable even with that frameskip?

Frameskipping hurts gaming performance (creating phantom input lag by virtue of a frame not seen until one refresh cycle later), so it is usually not worth it to use a refresh rate that frameskips.

You could try reducing Vertical Total a tiny bit (use a VT1088 or thereabouts) and see if you can make frameskipping disappear at a slightly higher refresh rate like 68Hz or 70Hz.

(Technical answer for technical readers: Smaller vertical totals can slow down scanout velocity, giving you a bit more overclock headroom until scanout velocity is beyond spec and begins skipping scanouts. A vertical-total shrink sometimes increases overclock headroom 1%-3%. Horizontal total shrinks help but only for dotclock-constrained situations rather than scanout-velocity-constrained situations. For "scanout" terminology, www.blurbusters.com/scanout explains better.)
