NVCP Ultra Low Latency Mode vs Max Frame Rate limit

Post by Laigerick » 26 Jul 2024, 21:12

What are the best 'set it & forget it' NVIDIA Control Panel global settings for gaming on a 165Hz G-SYNC Compatible display? Specifically this is in regards to games where Low Latency Mode would be relevant (i.e. a game where NVIDIA Reflex is not supported). I've seen people make arguments for both of the configurations I've listed below and would very much appreciate a definitive answer.

G-SYNC: Enabled
Vertical Sync: On
Low Latency Mode: Ultra
Max Frame Rate: Off

--- or ---

G-SYNC: Enabled
Vertical Sync: On
Low Latency Mode: On
Max Frame Rate: 162 (-3 max refresh rate)

LLM has no effect when the frame limiter is always activated every frame (meaning the game always reaches the FPS cap.) So in that case, there's no difference between the two options you listed, since the FPS limiter prevents latency buildup already. LLM ultra, on or off make no difference whatsoever. Latency will always be at the minimum possible.

However, when the game is unable to reach the FPS cap because the GPU (not the CPU) is maxed out, then "ultra" can mitigate some of the latency increase due to the GPU bottleneck. If it's a CPU bottleneck, "ultra" doesn't do anything since it's there to deal with GPU bottlenecks.

So I'd say "ultra" is the set & forget option. Which is what I use in the global profile. Although I use an FPS cap on a per-game basis. Some games I like to play at 90FPS, some others at 120FPS. The "ultra" setting in the global profile helps in the rare cases where the game can't reach the cap I've set.
