TN recommendations for best motion clarity until higher Hz OLEDs become cheaper?
Pretty much what the title says. I don't mind used and/or old monitors. But I would prefer 1440p since I'm so used to it already.
Context: I've tried a plethora of IPS and VA monitors and they all give me headache and nausea in most games. I have tried different sizes, putting them further away, turning VSync on and off, Night Light you name it.
I used to have a BenQ monitor, I'm not sure which one it was but I remember being able to play on it for hours. I used to sit pretty close to the monitor and be fine too (I'm pretty sure it was a TN panel).
UPD: Here's a list of the monitors that I've tested recently (some of them I've bought and returned twice due to quality issues):
-LG 27GL850-B (27" IPS 144hz)
-Acer Nitro VG271UM3bmiipx (27" IPS 180hz AUO)
-AOC 25G3ZM/BK (24" VA 240hz)
-MSI Optix G273QF (27" IPS 165hz)
None of these were good for me.
What is okay:
-iPhone OLED screens are fine.
-Quest 3 is okay (but I've used them only couple times 30 min max each time)

About the BenQ which you were able to play hours on, are you sure you weren't using strobing (DyAC, Lightboost) to enhance motion clarity? Perhaps this is what helped you enjoy the panel.gigadude wrote: ↑07 Sep 2024, 10:36Pretty much what the title says. I don't mind used and/or old monitors. Also if possible, name the specific models which haven't or had worked for you.
That way, it'll be easier for someone to give you an recommendation.
I can give you a few blind recommendations however:
- XL2566X+, XL2566K, VG258QM, Omen X 25 if you're interested in 1080p and adamant on TN's
If you're strictly set on 1440p, things are looking a little bit grim for you:
- AG273QZ, Omen X 27 (has PWM) & Lenovo Legion Y27gq-25 are the only ones which fit this category (they're not as quick as the ones above and they very likely use the same panel just a different backlight & way of adjusting brightness)

Re: TN recommendations for best motion clarity until higher Hz OLEDs become cheaper?
Thank you for the reply and your recommendations! I will look into them, although so far at the price of these I might wanna consider getting something like KTC G27P6 OLED or smth for the time being...
I was using the old BenQ monitor as is. It was a while ago, monitors in general didn't cause headache or nausea for me back then.

Re: TN recommendations for best motion clarity until higher Hz OLEDs become cheaper?
You've tried a lot of slow panels, I can assure you that much. 144Hz sample & hold (the default on LCD) is extremely blurry and hard on the eyes. The 240hz AOC VA is also very slow for it's refresh rate.gigadude wrote: ↑07 Sep 2024, 13:56-LG 27GL850-B (27" IPS 144hz)

Getting a proper 240hz-360hz panel is gonna be a major improvement in overall motion clarity, for sure.
The Quest 3 has strobing turned on, making it "effective 2kHz" (marketing term, I think it was ~0.5ms MPRT)
Apart from those I've mentioned, you could also try these as a stop-gap for OLED (IPS/VA ones):
24G2ZU, XG249CM, XG2431 (strobing can make it substantially clearer than the rest), VG259QM, MAG251RX - 1080p 240hz
I forgot to mention, 27G1S and 27G1S Plus are mighty fast, the former being much better (faster G2G, better contrast, but shoddy availability everywhere, iirc there was one in some NL store for ~370eur) - both 1440p 240hz and ~300$

Re: TN recommendations for best motion clarity until higher Hz OLEDs become cheaper?
This is good news for me, thank you so much! Those 1440p ones and the ViewSonic one sure look promising to me, I will try to get a hold of one of those and test them out.kyube wrote: ↑08 Sep 2024, 07:38

Re: TN recommendations for best motion clarity until higher Hz OLEDs become cheaper?
I know at least a few who simply buys a comfortable strap for their Quest 2/3/Pro and simply use a virtual monitor in their Meta Quest using software such as Virtual Desktop or other. Used Quest 2 64MB are cheaper than gaming monitors, while massively outperforming gaming monitors in motion clarity (albiet not latency). Quest 2 even beats Sony FW900 CRT monitor in motion clarity!
It's fairly hard to beat in low MPRT, since its strobe backlight is a fairly bright 0.3ms MPRT which requires 3333fps 3333Hz to match strobelessly (framerate-based motion blur reduction approach instead of strobe-based motion blur reduction approach).
That said, YMMV. 240Hz OLEDs will probably continue to fall in price, especially as more mainstream writers extoll the mainstream benefits of 240Hz.

Re: TN recommendations for best motion clarity until higher Hz OLEDs become cheaper?
Hi, I've seen you recomended the VG259QM. I don't know if you knew It but this monitor suffered an issue were Asus would sell this monitor with a slightly worse panel (AUO 25) compared to the OG ones (QISDA Q25). This seemed to be the case for the newer batches due to the chip shortage we've had during COVID. I was wondering if you had a newer sample of this monitor and if yes, which panel does It have?kyube wrote: ↑08 Sep 2024, 07:38You've tried a lot of slow panels, I can assure you that much. 144Hz sample & hold (the default on LCD) is extremely blurry and hard on the eyes. I don't think the VG259QM had a panel change at all, "QISDA" should be the same as AUO.s1lentiwnl wrote: ↑30 Nov 2024, 13:42Hi, I've seen you recomended the VG259QM. I don't own the display, was just a general recommendation based upon reviews of it.
